I awoke to a dull pain right between my eyes. I sighed and shifted to my back. Memories from last night bombarded me and I blinked away tears. I honestly don’t want to face the day. I just want to hide in my blankets all day. But I didn’t want to be a coward so I tossed back my covers and stood up. Then fell back on my bed. Ouch! Ok, stood up too fast. I thought as I stood up again, this time more slowly. I rubbed my forehead, annoyed. Great…I know it will be a bad day when I get a headache first thing in the morning. I sighed again and went to my closet.
I slipped on a My Chemical Romance shirt and dark blue jeans. I slipped on my black converse and pulled my hair into a ponytail. It was then that my head started to hurt more. I went to my bathroom and grabbed a Tylenol from my medicine cabinet. Time to get the day over with… I walked past my full length mirror and saw something black poking out from my shirt. I tilted my head and took off my shirt, gasping as I saw intricate wings tattooed on my back.
“This is weird…How did this happen?” I asked myself as I swiped at my forehead, wanting that pain to go away. Let me show you the True Form… Show you how you really are. I gasped as I heard the ghostlike whisper around me. I looked around, eyes wide with fear. All I saw was my crow sitting on the windowsill, sleeping. “Wh-Who’s there?” I stuttered.
Time for your True Form. It whispered again. I took one step from the mirror and immediately crumpled to the ground, gasping and screaming silently in pain. You’re True Essence and Form shall be revealed to you! I gasped and finally let out a shriek. It felt like my body was burning, being stretched. But within moments it all ended, with me curled in a ball and my crow pecking at my side. I swatted it away and sat up, groaning in pain. What the fuck just happened? I screamed silently. I took in a deep breath and stood up. From there, I froze, eyes wide once again as I looked in the mirror.
“Oh. My. God,” I said slowly, studying what I was seeing. I saw deathly pale skin, sharper bone structure, hair down to my back, and eyes looking like ice. I couldn’t stop staring. I looked so foreign, like something out of a nightmare. My sight was sharper, my hearing was keener and my smell was just phenomenal. Tears rolled out of my eyes as I smelled the faint scent of blood.
You grieve too much, my Daughter. You’re stronger than that. I whirled around as I heard the whisper again. I sighed in relief as I saw Karina materialize from mist. “Change me back!” I cried, not wanting to go to school looking more of a freak. “Please,” I dropped to my knees in front of her.
I’m sorry I caused you this pain, Daughter. Just be lucky it was me and not Karinara. Your True Form transformation would’ve have been much worse. She smiled sadly, and bent down to stroke my cheek. The world went blurry and I fell forward, coughing slightly. As I finally got my sight back, I looked up to thank her, but Karina disappeared. I sighed and stood up, putting my shirt back on.
I clicked my tongue at the crow, which was staring at me. I extended my hand to it, letting it hop into my hand. “You are a peculiar bird,” I said, with a slight smile of my face. I sighed once again, feeling, yet again, yesterday’s memories catching up to me.
“Might as well get this day over with, right?” I shook my head, setting the bird on my windowsill. “I promise to try and do something about that wing of yours, ok?” I grabbed my bag and went downstairs, finally going out the front door to face the day as strong as I can.
