My heart stopped. “Mom,” I said, voice trembling. “Please answer me!” I bit my lip to try to stop my crying. I went over to her, and saw a dark pool of scarlet on the bed. When I saw that, I literally fell to the floor, unable to stop my tears. I heard the barest of movements and I froze, trying to hear the movements again. I heard the flicker of wings and I turned around, seeing a crow perched on the windowsill. It tilted its head at me and cawed softly, then jumped down onto the floor. It hopped slowly towards me, while I’m still frozen in fear. I am such a coward.

The crow finally stopped in front of me and I waited for it to peck the hell out of my face. Instead it looked up at the bed and cawed at me again. I looked at it, confused, and then I got it. “You can’t fly…can’t you?” I said, and the crow just stared at me. I sighed a bit and stretched out my arm slowly. The crow jumped back a bit then slowly hopped onto my hand. I hesitated then stood up then set it on the bed.

It hopped around the bed, and I stood there, completely mesmerized. The crow looked at my mom then at the pool of blood, bowing its head slightly. Caw caw! The crow called out quietly and jumped to the edge of the bed. I held out my arms again and let it hop onto my hand.

“You’re a curious little bird, aren’t you?” I cooed at the bird, stroking its feather gently. When I reached its left wing, the crow pecked my hand. “OW!” I exclaimed, shooting my hand back. I touched its right wing and the crow didn’t react. “Something’s wrong with your wing,” I looked at my mom and tears burned my eyes again. I set the bird on the bed and grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911.

After the first ring, a woman with a kind voice answered, “Hello. 911. What’s your emergency?”

“Um, yeah. Can you send an ambulance over? I just found my mom dead on her bed and there is so much blood on her bed…Please hurry.” My voice broke and I started crying again.

“Sure, sweetie. Calculating your address and sending an ambulance now.”

“Thank you.” I pushed end, let the crow hop into my hand again and I went downstairs to the living room to wait from the ambulance, sobbing still. This fucking sucks! I thought, staring out the window. Few minutes later, I heard the wailing siren as the ambulance came. Three knocks on the door. I stood up after I put the crow on top of the couch and answered the door. I was greeted by a man who was only a touch taller than me, had brown hair with blonde highlights and was slim but I could see the muscles. He smiled sadly at me and said, “Miss? Where is your mother?” I clenched my jaw to keep from crying, extended my arm, let the crow hop onto my hand and I looked at the man.

“Follow me.” I turned, and led him upstairs to my parents’ room. I didn’t enter; I just stayed in the hallway. “She’s in there, sir.” I said lamely. He simply nodded and entered then I heard him sigh. He called in the rest of the team from the ambulance team and they brought in a gurney. I petted my crow softly, more tears falling. Not looking forward to school tomorrow. I looked around and realized I haven’t seen Dad all night. I sighed and saw two people pull the gurney with my mom on it go past me.

“Oh mom…” I murmured softly. The man appeared again and looked at me. “You alright, miss?” I just stared at the floor. He put a hand on my shoulder and said, “I’m sorry for your loss.” And with that he left.
