[At Home]
The girls were over because, frankly, we all needed each others company. We were working on my newspaper sculpture. It was really coming together. Charlotte handled getting all the newspaper. Kel turned on some music and got drinks. Di, J, and I took turns wetting the newspaper. The music was blasting and we were putting in work.
"This is actually very therapeutic." Di pat the newspaper and smiled.
"Yeah. Thats why if I were to get an actual job, I would still hold on to my art." I smoothed for air bubbles.
"Did your mother ever force you to be a surgeon?" J asked.
"Of course. By the time I was in middle school, my soul was sold to medicine. Technically I have the education to be a surgeon, but no. I can't." I explained.
"Your mother is like the God of surgery. Your sister is like the empress of neuro. This is all weird. What did your mother do?" Di joked.
"My mother was very strict when it came to grades and made sure everything I talked about was medical. I guess she just.....suffocated me." I never got F's in school.
"Wow. If only my mother was that hard on me. My mother ran a hair salon and would occasionally forget to pick me up from school. She didn't really mind what I did. I was smart and going to law school. I was her bragging rights." Charlotte interjected.
"My mother couldn't get a real job, because she was still somewhat of an illegal immigrant. She still had a degree in education so she homeschooled me." I almost forgot that J was Mexican.
"Have you told your mom about your current situation?" Di asked.
"Its not the time. My baby cousin is having her quincenera soon. I don't wanna rain on her parade, literally."
I nodded, "Could you cut up some newspaper for the mane, Kel?"
She stared into space. I got up and saw her in the corner staring out my window.
I tapped her, "You okay?"
"Fine." She smiled. "Did I zone out?"
"Yeah....you wanna cut some of the newspaper? It will get your mind off whatever you're thinking about."
"Oh, I'm fine." She got up.
"You forget that me and that lie, are really good friends." I smirked.
She sat and cut up paper for the mane. I ended up making a lion. It had nothing to do with John, more of, I really liked his idea. If he saw this and claimed rights on it, I would punch him in his face. After HOURS, we had finally finished. They should be glad I started before they came over. They would be beat.
"Oh my gosh...." They all said in unison.
"Tired?" I looked at all of them.
"How do you do this?!" J fussed.
"Girlll. I'm tired. I'll see yall later." Di got off the floor. Kel helped her up.
"Dang grandma, I can hear your joints poppin'" Kel joked as she held her hand.
Di smacked her with the other, "Hush! You weren't on the floor the whole time, space cadet!"
"C'mon granny. I need to get you home before you miss your meds."
The rest of us were laughing at them. Di really did look like a granny. She was all hunched over. They left and we all waved to them.
"I guess thats my cue too." J got up.
