Later that weekend Dani asked me to help her learn to drive.

"Has mom taught you anything?"

"No, she never wants to."

"And Nick?"

"He said he would teach me but every time I ask him about it he brings up an excuse."

"Hm..."

"Please, Via." she tugged on my arm. I sighed and said okay. When we walked outside she pulled out the keys to Nick's car and unlocked it.

"Aren't we gonna use mom's car?"

"Nick took mom's car so we're using his car. Would you rather use yours?"

"Uh, no." We loaded into his car and she started it and made her way down the driveway. I didn't like her driving in this weather but she insisted upon it, saying this was a good experience for when she's older. The neighborhood we live in is very quiet and the street is usually pretty vacant. She drove up and down the street then down to the gas station. On the way back the road was empty and she sped up.

"Slow down, it's too rainy to be doing that."

"Don't worry I know how to drive."

"Dani, seriously, if we get into a wreck and have to call the police then I'm the one getting arrested. Not you."

"We're not gonna crash." the hum of the engine grew a bit louder and my stomach clenched as I waited for something to happen. Sure enough, a squirrel came prancing into the road minding his own goddamn business. I screeched 'Dani!' and she screeched 'fuck!' as the brakes were slammed and we jolted forward. The car spun in about a ninety-degree angle, taking out the mailbox behind us before skidding to a halt. Dani clasped her hands over her chest.

"My hearts pounding holy shit!" She covered her face with her hands and I let out a long exhale and looked around to see if anyone had noticed it. We were overtaken by the same silence that had possessed the street before our presence. No one had seen what happened.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, are you?" Dani looked utterly shocked and I was surprised by my own reaction. I felt fine. Not shaken up one bit, just concerned for her and worried about facing the consequences of our actions.

I got out the car while Dani called my name. I walked over behind the car, seeing the mailbox struck down and a large scratch on the car. It then dawned on me that the owner could sue and I could lose my license. I ran over to the driver's seat, ushering my sister out and over to the passenger's side before I drove us down the road and back to our house. I parked his car right up against the garage and then we spent the next few minutes repeating the phrases 'shit' and 'oh my god' as we examined the scratch.

We went inside with the firm agreement not to tell anyone. No one should ever know and maybe just maybe Nick wouldn't find out for a while. We walked in and sat in the living room. My mom sipped some tea and asked how it went. My sister and I looked at each other, then at our mom. I suppose that's when the realization of what happened really hit us because we, with all the dignity in the world, proceeded to spill our guts.
