Audi walked to the big glass doors that said "Southern Miami Creamery" in cute, curly letters. She pushed the door inwards to the clean pastel-themed shop and was met with the familiar smell of cream and sugar from the back room.
She said hello to her coworkers and walked to the back to put on her apron with her name embroidered onto the front pocket.
Audi's shift didn't start until 7:30, and it was only 7:16, but she liked to be there early in case there was anything important she needed to know or one of her coworkers had to leave a little early. It was just the person she was. She liked to help people and make them smile. If she could make someone's day, it made hers too.
She sat at a table near the front of the ice cream line and chatted with Margaret, her boss, about the new flavors and any special deals they had that day. Her shift was usually slow, but since it was late, it was usually the ideal time for teenagers or couples without children to come get icecream, and that's what she liked about it. Whenever kids came in, that meant that she was going to have to clean up the sticky, melted mess they left behind on top of cleaning the tops of the tables before she left and closed the shop for the night.
When the clock above the doors turned to 7:30, two of her coworkers rushed to the back to return their aprons and leave for the night, leaving Audi and another guy named Joe to start. A good thing she liked, she could control the music played in the shop buy an AUX cord next to the register. She played her favorite playlist that had to be revised so explicit songs weren't played.
She spent the first hour serving a couple of customers and eating small portions of cookie dough ice cream. The second hour was very slow customer wise, but that was okay as when business was slow, Margaret let them turn up their music and chill on their phones.
At about 9:30, the small bell on top of the door rung and two teenage girls walked in, dancing to the music blaring through the speakers.
"Hey! What are you guys doing here?" Audi smiled as her roommates entered.
"We want ice cream," Ava said, eyeing the many flavors behind the glass.
The girls were served and sat at a table next to the register, usually for kids who want to watch the ice cream being made, and talked about nothing in particular but how they were bored and wanted to visit. It was reaching 9:45 when Ava brought up the subject of talking to their online friends. "I talked to Dan today," she said taking a gummy bear out of her cup. "He was lagging really bad because of his wifi at the hospital. Apparently he's kinda sick.."
Ashley looked down at the table as she started to put together pieces of a dark puzzle in her mind. "Did he say why he was sick?"
Ava shook her head, "he told me not to worry as he is going to leave soon and go on vacation, so I guess it's something small if he can travel."
Audi was silent as she listened, Ashley letting out a breath of relief as it probably wasn't serious.
They continued to chat about random topics and soon it was 10:00 and Margaret was telling them that they could leave. It was Joe's turn to clean the tables so Audi walked to the back, removed her apron, and met her friends at the front of the shop ready to go home.
