SOTC- dream by imagine dragons

Laughter was heard throughout the apartment that night as Dan tackled Audi onto the bed, attacking her sides with his fingertips. Noises flew from her mouth that sounded incredibly unattractive to her but the opposite to Dan as he continued to tickle her just to hear them again.

"Dan! Stop! Please! I can't breathe!" She cried, a tear beginning to form in her eyes. She tried to pry his hands away, but he was much stronger than she was, and easily returned to his assault. Even though Audi was crying in laughter at this point, she could still see the smile that was on his face. A smile that she hadn't seen in a while. To know that there was still a place where Dan could reach his real, pure laughter and smile his beautiful smile was a good thing to find in the broken boy.

With her wrists pinned by one of his hands and the other at her sides, his hips held down her legs that scrambled for an escape that she couldn't grip. She kneed and kicked him to get him off of her but it was no use as they let go and had a huge laugh.

But then it happened so fast.

Audi's swift motion of a kick sending Dan's knee off the edge of the bed with a gasp and tumbling him into the floor where his breath was quickly knocked back out of his lungs.

Audi still laid on the bed, catching her breath and wiping the tears from her cheeks. "Damn, Dan. I can't even breathe," she laughed and pulled her tshirt back down her torso. When she got no response except for short and quick gasps that represented small laughter, she turned over and peeked over the side of the bed with a small smile etched on her lips.

"Dan!" She yelled, jumping from the bed to his side, her hands moving but not knowing where to go to help him. "Breathe, baby, you'll be okay." She repeated those words as she pulled Dan into a sitting position, then helping him to get his weight onto the bed. "I had no idea, I'm so sorry. Just breathe. I'm sorry, Dan."

He placed a hand on her shoulder, taking a breath to talk but being cut off by coughs that made his chest ache. The wind ripping through his lungs and burning the tissue of his throat. His eyes welled up with tears as he struggled to catch a breath, the coughs taking over and scaring the both of them immensely.

The more he caught his breath, the louder his coughs got, sending more and more tears to run down his face. Audi scrambled around, trying desperately to help but not knowing what to do.

"Do you want me to call 911?"

Dan shook his head rapidly to say no.

"But you're choking! I don't know what else to do!" She threw her hands up, dropping the phone onto the bed.

Walking over to Dan who had begun to cease his coughs, she grabbed his hand and started to cry. All of her fear suddenly catching up to her now that it was under control.

"Don't-" he croaked. "M'okay."

He coughed some more, holding his chest in pain.

"You're not okay."

"I am. I have my breath back, I'm fine." He argued, taking a deep breath afterwards and clearing his throat of a lingering pain.

Audi said nothing, afraid that more words could trigger him into something they both didn't want. She sat on the bed, playing with her fingers and listening to the sound of Dan clearing his throat.

Minutes went by and neither of them said a word. Dan on the other hand couldn't seem to get the feeling of something stuck at the back of his throat under control. He coughed quietly, cleared his throat, and groaned in frustration when the feeling wouldn't go away. Then a new feeling arose and became a tickle in the bottom of his throat. Shakily standing from the bed, he felt lightheaded and grabbed onto his dresser for support.

"Dan," Audi said placing a hand on his bicep to steady him.

"I'm fine, just give me a minute."

Audi ignored his comment and continued to try to get him to sit back onto the bed but Dan shook his head and lightly pushed her back behind him.

"I said give me a minute," he growled. Walking to the bathroom with his stomach churning ever so slightly, he locked the door behind him and began to cough again. These coughs were forceful and caused Dan to double over, the feeling building up through his throat. Audi knocked on the door, begging him to open it and let her help him, but he could barely focus with the sounds ripping through him and the pain that choked him. Then came the feeling of vomit and he was gagging with every breath, struggling to get rid of the pain.

"Please! Open the door!" Audi cried, her fist closed around the doorknob, hoping it would be unlocked and she could just comfort him through whatever was happening.

Dan was scared. It had been half an hour and the only sounds to come out of his mouth were sobs and the sound of him vomiting. Eventually the pain went away and he was left with the fear of what he had done and the effects of what had happened. For a better word he was terrified. His sudden lack of breath and the extent to almost choking had shown him he had gone too far.

"Dan..." Audi whispered, too tired to try and fight the locks anymore. "Please..."

The sound that had become familiar to them filled both of the rooms. Silence.

Click

The lock on the door was turned and just barely cracked open to see him sit against the wall with his head lolled to the side. He looked sickly and tired and it reminded her of just a couple of days ago. Dan let out a small smile of reassurance and suddenly Audi couldn't take it anymore. She took a few staggering steps into the bathroom before collapsing into Dan's open arms and burying her face into his neck, her fists gripping at his tshirt.

"I was so scared, I didn't know what was happening, or if you were ever gonna catch your damn breath-" she breathed out, cut off by Dan as he pulled the girl closer to his chest.

"You don't deserve to be scared," he whispered as he stroked her back.

"I just want you to be okay."

"How can you say that when you have no idea what happened?"

Audi stiffened in anger. "What the hell do you mean? I don't have to know what happened to hope you're okay when you're clearly not." She lifted her head and looked at him, searching his face to make sure if he was serious or not. "Can you I not care about you?"

Dan released his grip and laid his hands on her arms, sighing and feeling the burning feeling faintly in his throat. "You need to come with me tomorrow to the hospital."

"What?"

"I'm getting information about that viral infection I told you about- I want you to come.."

Taking in the invitation, she thought about what all it could be. She would finally found out exactly what was plaguing Dan. "But why me? You've told me nothing about what has happened and now you suddenly want me to take in everything?"

He wiped the dried tears from his cheeks and whispered, "you're the only person I trust."
