“Tell me everything.”
I could feel Sam’s eyes on mine as I pretended to be interested on my hands that were resting on my lap. Rhys cleared his throat uncomfortably next to me.
“Kat, look at me.”
My insides fluttered when he called me by my nickname. I tilted my head up and sighed.
“Please don’t be angry,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. “After we broke up, I…” The words became lodged in my throat.
“She came running to me,” Rhys finished for me.
Guilt settled in the pit of my stomach as the expression on Sam’s face changed. His features hardened and he stared at me with cold eyes.
“What?” he seethed.
Tears sprung from my eyes. “I’m sorry, I know it was wrong but I was just so angry. I thought I could make you jealous—”
“By shacking up with the man that caused us to break up?!” he said incredulously.
“You went running to Sarah,” I fired back. “And we didn’t do anything, just kissing and… Nevermind, that doesn’t matter,” I rambled as Sam’s eyes darkened. “What matters is that I ended it with Rhys.”
My gaze involuntary flickered to Rhys who didn’t react to my words. In fact, he was eerily calm about it and it worried me even more than if he cursed at me.
“Why?” Sam asked.
My eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean why? Because I—”
“Because he hit you?”
“I did not hit her,” Rhys spoke before I could reply.
“She is scared of you, I can see it in her eyes,” Sam said.
I blinked and realised he was right. It was my fault that he was like this and I knew that, but I was scared to even look at him. The image of him punching the wall inches away from my face replayed in my mind. An icy shiver ran down my spine and I looked down.
“See! Look at her!” I knew Sam was pointing at me. “You did something to her.”
“I was violent,” Rhys admitted and my head snapped up. “But I never hit her.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” Sam practically screamed, standing up abruptly.
“Sam, sit down.” I instructed in a low voice.
He let out a low grumble but obeyed. Rhys visibly relaxed.
“It means,” he explained quietly, “I just punched the classroom wall next to her face.”
“Classroom?” Sam hissed.
And then I mentally slapped myself, because Sam wasn’t aware of the incident at the school. Sarah had only informed him of the time at the apartment.
“He didn’t do anything at my apartment,” I quickly intervened before Sam got the wrong idea. “He just shouted at me, and before you start having a go at him—don’t, because I deserved it. And… well, he already told you what happened at the school but I promise that is all that happened. He didn’t hit me.”
Sam looked at me for a few seconds, searching my face for any signs that I was lying, before closing his eyes and sighing deeply. “Okay. I believe you.”
My shoulders sagged in relief. “Thank you.”
“That doesn’t mean I’m not angry at him.”
“Don’t blame him, it’s all my fault.” I grabbed Sam’s hand and squeezed his fingers to comfort him.
“I love you,” he croaked, opening his eyes.
I smiled. “I know. I love you, and I’m sorry.”
“Me too. I never should have moved out. I should have stayed and we could have talked about it, then maybe none of this would have happened.”
I turned to Rhys and opened my mouth to say something and then suddenly something else occurred to me. “Where is Craig?”
From the way Rhys cursed under his breath, I knew he had forgotten all about him. So had I.
“Shit,” he muttered, eyes wide with panic. Before I could blink, he had shrugged on his jacket and was running towards the door. I felt awful. The entire reason that I had been trying to help Rhys was because of his son, and not one of us had even remembered that he was still at the school, waiting for his father to take him home. Worry coursed through me as I checked my watch. School finished almost half an hour ago.
I felt Sam’s lips press against my forehead. “Stop worrying, he’ll be fine,” he murmured against my skin.
I sighed. “He’s just a child. He doesn’t deserve all of this.”
“I know,” Sam whispered, wrapping his arms around me. I was glad for the warmth. “But are you okay?”
“Me? I’m fine.”
“I really am sorry,” he said. “Every time you called me, I wanted to answer just so I could hear your beautiful voice again.”
“Why didn’t you?” I asked, pouting.
“I was so angry,” he said, burying his face in my neck, his curls tickling my cheek. “You chose him over me and I just knew that if I did answer, I would say something I’d regret.”
I ran my fingers through his curls. “We’re both in the wrong here. You shouldn’t have moved out so soon, it was a stupid idea and you clearly weren’t thinking properly but… I forgive you because I love you.”
“I forgive you and I love you too,” he said and I could hear the smile in his voice.
He pulled away only to crash his lips against mine. I missed the taste of his breath mixed with mine as he caressed my cheeks. He pressed his body against mine, our lips moving in sync. I was already feeling hot and fuzzy in the head, it was amazing the way my body responded to him so quickly.
His mouth moved to my neck where he planted kisses and blew on my skin, making me shiver in pleasure. I knotted my fingers through his hair and tilted my head back as he sucked.
“I love you,” I breathed.
He kissed me again and I backed up to the bedroom. Everything was going so fast but I didn’t care anymore. I had missed his touch so much and now I just couldn’t get enough of it.
“You are so beautiful,” he whispered as he lay me down on the bed and my insides fluttered. The way he looked at me made me feel like I was the most gorgeous woman on the planet. “Oh, and Kat?”
“Yes?” I asked between kisses.
“I love you too.”
I'm sorry if the spacing is a little weird!
Anyways, hello! How are you all? I have been dying to write this chapter for a while. Hope you enjoyed the kissing part at the end ;) I won't elaborate on what happens next haha
