For once in her life, my mother had been right. Raj was hot.
His dark hair swept across his face just above his chocolate brown eyes, and a dazzling smile was stretched across his face. One of the many things I look for in a man is good looks, and he certainly had them.
‘Hot’ didn’t seem enough.
“It’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you.”
I practically swooned. Even his voice could make me blush. It was deep and manly, with a hint of amusement.
“It’s nice to meet you too,” I said with a goofy grin.
“Listen, I was wondering if maybe –“
“Shh,” I interrupted him, pressing a finger to my lips. I could hear faint murmurs from outside the room.
“What?” he asked, confused. He obviously couldn’t hear them.
Narrowing my eyes, I tip-toed over to the door, being careful not to step on the creaky spots. I could make out what they were saying now.
“Why aren’t they talking?” somebody hissed. It was Mum.
“You don’t think they’re... you know?” asked Dad.
My cheeks flamed at his words and I was glad Raj could not hear them.
“Don’t be stupid!” Mum said angrily. “They’ve just met!”
“Let’s lean against the door, maybe they’re just being really quiet,” suggested Dad and I heard the floorboards creak as they stepped closer.
Knowing this was my chance, I grabbed the handle of the door and curled my fingers around it. With one last grin at Raj, who looked more baffled than ever, I pushed down the handle and yanked the door open.
They yelped in surprise as the door swung open, tumbling down like I knew they would. Raj strode over to the door and we exchanged amused glances.
“So,” I said loudly, stepping over them into the hall. “You thought you’d spy on us, did you?”
Mum tried to say something but it was muffled by the carpet. Raj joined me in the hall.
“Well, that’s not going to happen anymore. Come on, Raj.”
He looked worried but I grabbed his arm and dragged him away before he could argue. I stopped once we reached the front door and wheeled around to face him.
“I’m so sorry –“ I started.
He held up a hand to silence me.
“It’s not your fault. Don’t blame your parents, curiosity just got the better of them,” he said kindly, smiling.
“Thanks,” I said in relief. “You’re so understanding.”
He shrugged. “Listen, I’d really like to take you on a date some time... if you want.”
“Are you mad? Of course I want to!” I blurted out excitedly, then froze. “I mean... yeah, sure, that’d be great.”
“Great. Are you free tonight? Say, 8 o’clock?” he asked.
“Sure,” I said, and then whipped out my phone and flipped it open. “Do you want my number?”
He nodded and we swapped phones, thumbing each other’s numbers into the other’s phone. We swapped again and put them away.
“Okay, I’ll see you tonight,” he grinned, winking at me before leaving. I watched as he closed the door behind him and felt a jolt of excitement. I didn’t even know him and I had a good feeling about him already.

“How about this one?”
Sam gazed at me with a bored expression on his face. His eyelids were drooping and I clicked my fingers in front of his face.
“Hey! Don’t fall asleep!”
He jerked up suddenly, his eyes darting around the room, his face alert. Then he saw me, realised what was going on, and slumped back into his chair.
“Well?” I asked irritably.
“It’s nice,” he said mechanically.
I sighed and looked at myself in the mirror, posing. “You said that about the last 5 outfits!”
“Well, they were.”
“You’re no help,” I grumbled, stomping back into the bedroom. I began searching for a different outfit that I hadn’t tried and my eyes fell upon something.
It was an evening dress I had once gotten from my Aunt. She was rich and decided to buy me an expensive dress for my birthday last year. I had sworn to only wear in for special occasions... this could be counted as special, right?
I mean, if things went well, we could get married. Probably not straight away, because I wasn’t going to marry him until I was sure I loved him. But still... there was a chance we could end up together, and a first date is pretty important.
The dress was gorgeous. It was made of brilliant black satin and rhinestone. The rhinestone strap went over the shoulder and there was lace up back to allow for the perfect fit while the fishtail hem completed the elegant look.
When Sam saw me in it, his jaw dropped.
“Wow...” he said in awe, his eyes raking my body and he was looking at me funny. I took this as a good sign and hoped it would affect Raj in the same way.
“You like it?” I asked, staring at myself in the mirror and wondering who was looking back at me. It certainly wasn’t me.
Even without the dress, I looked different. The little amount of make-up I had put on had made a change to my face. My hair, usually lank and boring, was now sleek and shiny, and was cascading down past my shoulders in curls.
The shoes I had picked went perfectly with the dress too! Nothing could go wrong.
Nothing.
