“Can we kiss?”
I snorted and ended up choking on my food.
“Um... no,” I said after he pat me on the back.
“Why?” he nagged, using his fork to play with his pasta, which he hadn’t touched. It was clumped up into one corner of his plate to look like he’d eaten a lot.
“It’s weird!” I said, frowning. “Kissing you would be like... kissing a sibling.”
“Thanks,” he said sarcastically.
“Sorry,” I said hastily.
“It’ll look more realistic,” he insisted, pouting his lips and pointing at them. “How can you not want to kiss these lips, Kat?”
“Uh,” I said, cringing. “I’ll pass.”
“Okay,” he said, defeated. “It’s your loss.”
“It sure is,” I replied, biting back a smile.
We continued to talk about whatever came to mind. The list varies. At one point we were talking about eating bananas in our pyjamas (something we’ve always wanted to do) and the next we were talking about our most-feared T.V. villain.
“Cybermen,” Sam said instantly.
“What are they?”
Sam looked at me like I was crazy.
“Cybermen! You know, the robots with human brains in them!” Sam explained, but I stared blankly at him.
“I still don’t know what you mean...”
“They’re from Doctor Who!”
Ah. Doctor Who... I should have known.
“Freddy Krueger,” I said when he asked me. He burst out laughing and I felt pretty deflated. It was better than bloody cybermen!
“Come on!” I argued. “The guy can enter your dreams; that’s pretty scary.”
“O-okay,” he spluttered.
“Oh shut up,” I snapped, glancing at my watch. “They’re going to be here soon! Hurry up.”
Five seconds after I said that, the doorbell rang – twice.
“They’re early,” I said, cursing myself for not for-seeing this.
Sam’s eyes widened and his eyes travelled down to his food. Pouting, he looked up at me and then back to his food. I sighed and nodded.
“Thanks!” he said gratefully and began shoving the remains of his food into his mouth, leaving a massive stain on his face.
“Here,” I said, chucking him a napkin as I stood up. I walked over to the door and – with a fake smile plastered on my face – opened the door.
“Hi guys –” I started and was immediately shoved aside. Mum entered in with an excited smile on her face. I stumbled back, surprised, and turned to frown at Dad. He smiled apologetically and entered after me. “Uh... hi guys.”
“Hello Katrina,” Mum said vaguely, her eyes darting around the room. “Where is this Sam?”
“Mum,” I said gently, walking over to her. “You’ve met Sam before. He’s my best friend...”
