Chapter 20
This was not good.
I shouldn't have been crushing on my best friend. That was crossing the line. It's not like it is in the movies – two childhood friends rarely end up together.
"I'm an idiot," I muttered to myself, burying my head under my pillow. I couldn't tell Sam because he didn't feel the same way – it would just be awkward. So I'd just have to bury my feelings and hope they went away...
Wait.
Did he feel the same way?
He had agreed to the whole imaginary boyfriend plan. In fact, he volunteered. I thought back to all the times he'd been so sweet to me – like teaching me how to swim. But I'd always assumed he was just being a friend...
I shook my head. No, he was dating Sarah. He couldn't have feelings for me. And he seemed so heartbroken when they split up. Maybe all those nice gestures were just friendly.
"Hey, Kat?" Sam called, knocking on my door. I smiled wryly. Ever since he'd walked in on me in a bra, he'd been extra careful.
"Come in," I mumbled, rolling over so I was lying onto my back.
"Cute pyjamas," he commented, grinning toothily. "Anyway, your parents called. They want to meet up with us."
"Tell them no," I said sharply. I fought a blush at his previous statement.
"Too late," he responded, dangling the phone from his fingertips, "I already agreed. So get ready, we're leaving it an hour."
I groaned. "Leave me alone. I'm tired, let me sleep."
He sighed, glancing at the clock on my nightstand. "I'll give you three seconds to get up." He paused, looking at me sternly.
"One..."
I rolled over onto my stomach again and ignored him.
"Two..."
I looked at my bitten nails and frowned. It was a stupid, disgusting habit I'd recently picked up.
"Three..."
Here it comes.
A hand closed around my ankle and pulled hard. I kicked out, hit something, and then Sam cried out.
