Another Run In

I run through the halls, trying to fight back tears. I weave through the crowd of students, making sure not trip before I reach the exit of the school. I look down as people look at me. I'm not going to be embarrassed in public. I look up in time to see myself running into a chest. I start to fall over when hands grab my arms and pull me back up. I look up and meet eyes with the person I basically headbutted. Eyes. Of course...

"Hey, are you okay?" Kaoru asks me. I nod.

"You don't look okay to me." He persists. I look to the sky. Why can't he just leave me alone?

"It's none of your business." I have to look away, because his eyes are wide with concern and sympathy. Get over his eyes already! I tell myself. He puts his hands on my shoulders, forcing me to look back at him. He looks at me like he's about to say something important and/or touching. He takes a breath.

"You owe me my mug." I can't help it. I smile. And that makes him smile. He lets go of my shoulders and puts his hands in his pockets.

"Where's your twin?"

"Sick."

"That sucks."

"Eh, it's nice to be alone every once in awhile." I smile at that. I know the feeling. I push my hair out of my face. He cocks his head to the side.

"Are you coming to the dance Friday?" He asks. I shrug.

"Wasn't planning on it." He frowns a bit.

"You should. It'll be a lot of fun." I look at him, trying to read him. After a bit the corners of my my mouth turn up.

"I'll consider it." I tell him. He grins. His mouth and his eyes smile. I feel my heart skip a beat and I blink, trying to calm myself down. He looks up for a moment and looks back at me.

"Why were you so mean to Hikaru and me when you first met us?" He asks. Man I didn't see that coming. I think carefully before answering.

"Well, my friend dragged me into a situation that I didn't want to be in. I don't really like clubs like that. I was kind of angry that I let myself get talked into coming, so I ended up taking it out on you guys. Secondly, I hate it when guys are overly flirty, so when you guys spoke to us I was kind of upset. And to be honest your 'bromance' between you and Hikaru is kind of messed up...no offense. Does that answer your question?" I stares at me for a moment and I see a new look come into his eyes. Respect. He looks at me with respect.

"Yeah, I guess that makes sense. If it makes you feel any better the 'bromance' thing is an act. Most girls like it." He finally says. I smile and nod. He nods back.

"Excuse me, but I kinda need to go...if you couldn't tell from me running earlier." I tell him. Concern immediately comes back to his face.

"You're positive you're okay?"

"Positive." I respond. I smile again and start to walk away. After a couple of seconds I hear Kaoru's voice again.

"Don't forget the mug!"
