“And how does that make you feel?”

“Why do you keep saying that?” I growled at Dr. Moreno.

“That was the first time I asked you that,” she corrected.

“Oh, sorry… I was just used to all of the therapists on television saying that.”

“Well we aren’t on television are we? This isn’t some kind of fictitious ploy of entertainment for unsuspecting viewers… is it?” Dr. Moreno questioned intensely. We stared at each other for a few seconds.

“I guess not,” I finally uttered. Dr. Moreno started scribbling some more notes. I was lying down on a very comfortable sofa in the counseling office. It was Monday and my meeting with the grief counselor was in full swing. In all honesty, I would rather be anywhere but here. Unfortunately, I am the number one reason that the principal hired Dr. Moreno. True, I totally needed this counseling session but also true, I thought I was doing pretty well on my own. At this moment I was pretty sure that I channeled ‘angst-filled teen’ down to a tee. By the grace of God the bell rang soon after that and I was set free from this torture. Unfortunately, I would have to come back the next week and the week after that and so on.

“Well, it looks like our time is up. This was nice, wasn’t it?” Dr. Moreno asked trying to sound like she cared. I stayed silent and started towards the door. I could feel her still watching me and waiting for an answer. Well, she wasn’t getting one. Honestly, it wasn’t nice. I never want to do it again but I was forced to until I graduate. Yay me. Life just sucked ass recently. Today was a gloomy day. If I could see my soul, it would probably look exactly like the gray clouds above my head. If I had a soul.

My head was still pounding from the thought that Dev and his sister, whatever her name was; could have anything to do with Alec. They’ve been gone for a year. Alec was only here for a few months and they weren’t present for those either. There is no possible way that they could know something or have done something. Plus, they’re god-loving people. Well, at least Dev is. Saturday, after Amy got her hair back to normal, we left their house and I told her everything. About Tasha’s laptop and how Dev reacted to the notification on his. They were definitely up to something. Maybe stuff was going on at home or other Jesus type things. I don’t know. I knew that I had to get to the bottom of it.

Lunch was the next necessary period to skip to. Third and fourth didn’t mean anything. It’s not like we learned anything. What is this, school? Anyways, I walked over to the table with Skyler. I could faintly hear a song playing to my left. Then I heard it on my right a little closer. We continued on to the table. Ginny and Amy were sitting across from Chance. Skyler and I joined them and Paige ran up to us. She had several suited men behind her. There was also a camera crew. She snapped her fingers. They each handed us a box. Well, except for Ginny.

“These are my best friends. Except for Ginny. She’s my sister. It’s her birthday on Saturday too. Long story but no one cares. Film her if you want or whatever,” she explained to the cameras. Everyone except for Ginny awkwardly waved to the camera crew.

“Hi,” I said awkwardly speaking up. I looked down at the box. “What is this?”

“Open it,” she commanded. “You are all cordially invited to my Super Sweet Eighteen!”

We all opened our boxes simultaneously and Clarity by Zedd ft. Foxes starting playing. That explains the random music playing everywhere.

“Super Sweet Eighteen?” Amy repeated.

“Well, I’m turning eighteen. I can’t have a sweet sixteen. MTV agreed to let me have one this year,” Paige responded. “Don’t you just love my invitations? Clarity is like my favorite song!”
