I pressed the button and someone replied. "Name?" she asked. "Maelynn Abel, I'm here to pick up my daughter, Allison." I told her. "Come on in, Ms. Abel." I opened the door and walked into the main office. I signed Allison out and she walked in. She looked pale and sweaty. "Darlin' are you alright?" She shook her head and we walked out to my car.
We walked into the apartment and I went to the kitchen and made tea. I took the tea to Allison who was sitting on the couch watching youtube. I gave her the tea and she paused the music video. She set the school laptop down and I saw a familiar face. "What are you watchin'?" I asked. "A music video for the song 'Monster Inside'" She replied. "By who?"
"Natewantstobattle." she said, sipping her tea. "Okay well, you just lay here and relax. I'll be in my room getting some work done." I said, kissing her forehead and walking down the hall to my room. The next day I walked out of my bedroom and into Allison's. "Darlin' I'm goin' to work. Do you feel any better?" I asked. She shook her head and I nodded, placing the bucket next to her bed. "Call me or Mrs. Smith if you need anything." I told her. I kissed her forehead and walked out of the apartment.
I walked into the diner and into the backroom where my friend, Misty, was on break. She looked up from her phone. "How's Allison?' she asked. "It took all night but she isn't running a fever anymore." I told her. She nodded and then pulled something out of her pocket. She handed me the envelope. "Nate stopped by last night just before closing and asked me to give you this." she said.
I was about to open it when my boss came in. "Mae, we got customers waiting." I nodded, stuffing the envelope into my apron and walking out to the dining room. I walked behind the counter. 'What can I get ya, Randy?" I asked. "Not hungry." he replied. "I told ya before, Randy. You can't sit in here unless you order something." I said, slightly annoyed at how my shift was beginning. "Fine, coffee, black." he said pulling out five bucks. I nodded and went over to the coffee pot and poured his coffee. I walked it over to him.My shift went by slowly and finally I closed the diner. Misty and I were sitting in one of the booths counting oour tips. "It was a sloww day, I only made fifty-six." I said, shoving the cash back into my apron. I took out the envelope and opened it.
Mae,
I know it's been a long time since we last talked and I'm really sorry about the way we ended things. My mother told me that you are busy Saturday so Saturday night I'll be at the tree. Meet me there, we need to talk, and since I leave Sunday, this will the only chance I get.
Nate.
I sighed, putting it back into my apron. "What is it?" Misty asked. "After all these years he wants to talk." I replied. "Maybe you can get some child support out of him." she suggested, chuckling. I shook my head. "I don't want him even knowing they're related."
