Newts Little Sister (The Maze Runner)

Chapter Thirty-one

AUDREY'S P.O.V.
I gasped and stopped causing Minho to run into me. He immediately turned me around to face him. All of the other boys began pondering what to do.
"Minho I'm fine," I whispered to him "i've seen a body before."
"Doesn't mean you need to see stuff like that again" he replied pulling me into him and hugging me.
"Hey Audrey, Minho?" Thomas's voice called us.
"Yeah?" Minho answered turning around.
Thomas was peering through a door that was cracked open. "Come look at this."
Minho and I walked over and pushed the door open a little wider. It led to a hallway with another open door at the very end. On the walls were windows that peered into lab-like rooms. On the white walls there was blood spattered and the tile floor is where several bodies dressed in lab costs were.
"What do we do now?" I asked turning to Thomas.
He shrugged, "Where else do we have to go?"
"Well we can go the other way" Newt said pointing back the way we came.
"And walk for another two hours?" Frypan said, "That arrow back there directed us here."
"He's right." I agreed, "Maybe there is something in there that we need to find."
"Those people were shot to death," Minho began, "Maybe the killers are in there waiting to jump out and blow our brains out. And I don't feel like dying today."
"We don't exactly have a choice." Thomas said
"Yeah we do." Newt said
"What?" I said turning towards my brother "you want to turn around?"
"Aud," He said, "we dont know what's in there."
"So that means we just walk away? Didn't we already accomplish that if we were going to be killed we would be dead?" i replied
"She's right." Teresa said "we should go in there. We just have to be careful."
I smiled at her knowing almost everyone was on our side at this point.
"How about some of us go in there and-" Frypan began
"No." Newt stated "we are not splitting up. If we made it this bloody far then our group must be doing something right and we can't loose that."
"Then what are we supposed to do?" Frypan countered
"We need to at least look in there before we turn around," Minho said
"Agreed" I said
"Good that" Newt replied
"That's what we'll do then" Thomas said taking the lead again and going in first. The rest of us slowly shuffled forward to follow. I began to walk too until Frypan tapped me on the shoulder. I turned to face him and he pointed up. Above the door was a small white sign with red letters that read "EXIT".
"Seriously?" Frypan asked no one in particular. I shook my head and lightly laughed before Minho grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him through the door.
An orange light flashed and LED lights illuminated the entire hall with a blue tint. As we passed a window we saw two tables. On each was a body covered with blankets so we couldn't see the face but we saw the feet and hair. Both bodies looked like Ben and Alby. I looked forward unable to look anymore. We passed the first body lying on the ground. Minho kicked a gun that was next to the person away as a precaution. We continued walking slowly until we reached the room at the end. Inside of it was a circular table with many identical stations. Each station had a blue hologram screen. To our left was a wall with monitors showing pictures of the glade. Newt walked over to them and looked closer.
"They were watching us." he muttered.
I spun in a circle taking in the room. There were offices with glass walls in the far back corner but it looked Like all of them had been shattered.
I could see Thomas push a glowing red button at one of the stations. A video appeared in the back of the room. A blonde woman wearing a white shirt with a white jacket appeared. Her hair was pulled into a bun. She was sitting in one of the glass offices and people in lab coats ran around the room we were currently standing in. Her voice sounded desperate but calm as she spoke.
"Hello, my name is Doctor Ava Paige. I'm director of operations at the World In Catastrophe Killzone Department. If you are watching this that means you have successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you but circumstances seemed to have prevented it. I'm sure by now you must all be very confused, angry, frightened. I can only assure you that everything that had happened to you, everything we've done to you, it was all done for a reason. You won't remember, but the Sun has scorched our world." the screen changed to an image of a sunset only the Sun was huge over a field. The image changed to a fire raging through a street. "Billions of lives lost to fire. Suffering on a global scale." The screen flickered through different scenes like burning cars and the ashes of buildings. "The fall out was unimaginable." A picture of a pile of mangled bodies came into view. I looked at the floor taking deep breathes. Minho noticed and took my hand.
I looked back up when the screen showed the blonde woman again. "What came after was worse." She continued, "The flare" a video of an image from a microscope shown. A black mass seemed to be taking over and grew until it took up the whole screen quickly.
"A deadly virus that attacks the brain." a video of someone poking at a brain that was beginning to turn black appeared. I squeezed Minho's hand tightly and he glanced down at me. He out his arm around me pulling me close. Newt stood on my left and took notice.
"It is violent. Unpredictable." now a video of what looked Like a man with the disease struggling against chain's that held him to an operating table. His veins were black and his eyes were crazed. "Incurable. Or so we thought"
"In time a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly there was a reason to hope for a cure. But finding it would not be easy. The young would have to be tested-even sacrificed-inside harsh environments where their brain activity could be studies. All in an effort to understand what makes them different. What makes you different." The people behind the woman were beginning to look rushed. Like they were trying to gather everything they could. "You may not realize it, but your very important. Unfortunately your trials have just begun as you'll no doubt soon discover not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow. People are scared." in the background People wearing all black entered with machine guns. I gasped as they began shooting the people outside of the glass office. "It may be too late for us. For me. But not for you. The outside world awaits." one of the shooters began to shatter the glass walls.
"Remember" said Ava as she pulled out a small hand gun and aimed it at Her own head. "WICKED IS GOOD."
I buried my face into my boyfriend's shoulder as the gunshot From the video rang through the room. I felt Minho move slightly and I lifted my head. His eyes were following Thomas who was staring at something. I looked past him to see A white suited body lying in one of the offices. Ava Paige.
An alarm sounded suddenly making us all jump. We turned to our right to see a door opening up into a passageway with a bright light at the end. We all stared down it.
"Is it over?" Chuck asked
"She said we were important." Newt said From next to me "Well what are we supposed to do now?"
"I don't know," Thomas began "lets get out of here."
With that we All walked forward getting ready to leave.
Until a voice called for us to stop.
