KEIRA:
Another tight squeeze went through my stomach as I laid in the cold hospital bed. In the room next to me, I could hear the newborn baby crying. He or she sure is a fussy baby. Looks like soon, I'll be having a baby in this room. Monaé sat in the chair with a blanket on her body. She insisted on being my support since Trey won't answer and my dad isn't here yet.
"How are you feeling?" The doctor asked as she placed hand santizer in her hand. "Can I get an epidural?" I pleaded. The doctor checked to see how far I was. "Sorry sweetie, not yet." She told me as she checked the baby's heartbeat. The look on her face scared me. "This isn't good." I heard on mumble. "Is everything alright?" Monaé asked as she stood up. The doctor shook her head. "The baby's heartbeat isn't right. Your liver infection is causing you to have a fever and the baby isn't responding right."
Liver infection. I hated hearing that. I let my self go, I endangered an internal organ and most importantly, my baby. "So are you even more determined to deliver this baby as soon as possible?" I asked. The doctor nodded. "Yes, I'll be back." She said as she headed to the door. As she left, he came right in. Trey.
TREY:
Keira didn't seem like herself. She looked like she will ripe someone's head off and the head is mine. I know she hates me, but I need to explain myself. "How are you feeling?" I asked, planting a kiss on her forehead. I placed my hand on her stomach. My daughter will be here any minute. "I'm fine." Keira turned her back away from me. Monaé cleared her throat as she sat back down. "Babe, we can talk?" I asked. "Really? Here, right now?" Keira whined. "I'm in fucking labor, Trey. I don't have time for your shit!" Keira whinced in pain. She took deep breaths as another painful contractions passed.
"How far along are you?" Why did I ask that when I don't even understand the whole concept of childbirth. "I haven't even got the epidural." Keira answered as she stared at the monitor. I could see the panic she had. This is intense, crazy. Our daughter is coming now and she's not suppose to be here now. "I love you." I whispered against Keira's lip as I kissed her. Luckily she was pain or she would knock the shit out of me for kissing her.
KEIRA:
I smiled as my dad gave me another hug. It felt so much better to have him here with me. "Don't worry, everything will be okay." Dad assured. I've been in labor for 6 hours now. No epidural, the pain is getting worse and the doctor looks more concerned every time she comes back in here. Melissa walked in with hot chocolate for everyone. I could tell there were problems with her and Trey, but this isn't the time for that. All that mattered was my daughter.
A technician came in to take my temperature. Everyone except Trey left the room. "I'm just going to check your temperature." She said as she placed the thermometer in my mouth. "So what are you having?" She asked us. "A girl." Trey replied for me. "You two have a name for your daughter?" A name? We never finished that discussion. "It's a surprise." I said as she took the meter out of my mouth. "Your temperature went down, and oh, you're leaking." She pointed out my bed was soaked. This was embarassing! She quickly cleaned up everything before she left. "Good luck on your daughter." She told us as she left.
~
7 hours and 20 minutes.
I let out a scream. The pain was unbearable. Who could survive this? Did Monaé go through this? Am I overreacting? The nurse finally arrived. The epidural did no help, it was more of the enemy. Now I just wanted to get my daughter out. "I think you'll be pushing soon." The nurse said as she called for the doctor. Oh this is really happening!
Monaé stood by my side and held my hand as another nurse came and held up my leg. Trey was on the other side, holding my other leg. "Alright let out a big push, Keira." The doctor instructed. I did as he said. I listened as the nurse counted. 9...10. Stop. I threw my head back and took a deep breath before I pushed once more. "You're doing great, we can see parts of the head!" The nurse squealed. She's almost here!
I began one more push. This was about my 5th one. "The baby's head is out, come on Keira, a nice big one!" The nurse shouted as I pushed once more. I let out a small shriek as I finished my final push. I heard a faint cry and Monaé held her hands over her mouth in complete shock. Soon a little baby was placed right on my body. Finally, she was here.
