[54] "Truce."

The parents

Something was wrong. Demetrius Rice had been involved with his wife for over 18 years and knew her like the back of his hand. She was a nervous wreck. Babyboy Coleman was being monitored in the nursery as his mother recuperated. Ethan was getting his hand x-rayed due to Sierra squeezing it too hard during the labor. Demetrius had a feeling that Sierra purposely hurt her husband as payback for getting her pregnant.

Demetrius wanted the night to end on a good note but by looking at his wife he had a feeling that it wasn't going to happen. To seek privacy, he pulled her from the waiting room where the rest of the family and friends waited so they could talk alone.

"Talk to me," he requested when they rounded the corner.

"I can shake the feeling that something is wrong but I can't get a reading on it," Avery confessed. "I tried to call Nevaeh but she won't answer. I'm worried Demetrius."

Demetrius trusted his wife's intuition. He was already fishing his keys out of his pocket before she could finish her statement. "Let me tell Zeke."

"You might want to bring him. It's not just Nevaeh I'm worried about."

Avery tried to call her daughter again but after a few rings the call went to voicemail.

Sammie

On instinct Sammie stepped in front of Nevaeh to protect her from Quincy. The decision was made rapidly without a second thought. He would put his life in order to keep her safe. The moment Quincy lifted the gun Sammie felt his life stop and she was the only thing that mattered. Nothing was more important in that moment then protecting the girl he loved.

He appreciated that his cousin had the same idea. Teddy pushed Neveah back behind his body. As a result, Quincy would have to get through him and Teddy before harming Nevaeh. Sammie hoped that if Quincy decided to end their lives that Nevaeh could get back inside and into safety before she was harmed. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if something happened to her. She deserved to finish high school and attend art school. She deserved the right to enjoy her life to get married and have babies. It hurt his heart that all of that was at risk because of him.

Sammie felt like a certified fuck up. In some way he had to fix it. He had to clean up the mess he made. Palms facing up he tried his best to get Quincy to put the gun down. "Q listen," he started "there's no need for any of this."

Quincy wasn't backing down. "There was no need for you to fuck with my sitter. Tell me why I got a phone call today from her crying? You took shit too far."

Sammie had to hold his tongue. He figured that Quincy must have forgotten that he convinced Tana to abort his child. Sammie wanted to hurt Quincy because he was still hurt. He wanted to laugh at the irony of the situation. He started dealing with Porsha to get a reaction from Quincy but he didn't expect it to be of this magnitude. He hated having regrets but this whole situation was definitely a lesson learned. If he got out of it safely he would never do anything foolish again.

"What I did was wrong, I completely agree. I wasn't thinking. But I stopped it before it went too far. Your sister is a beautiful girl and she deserved better. I know that and I apologize."

Quincy still held the gun up at the trio not moving.

Nevaeh was hoping that maybe she could help by begging. "Please Quincy, this is wrong-." Her words were cut off when Teddy placed a hand over her mouth.

Sammie wanted to turn around to comfort her but didn't want to take his eyes off of Quincy. He took another step forward. "She's right Q."

"Fuck all of y'all. You think you're so much better than everyone else."

Sammie wasn't going to argue with him. He instead focused on getting his cousin and girl away from danger. "Your beef isn't with them and you know it. How about you let Teddy and Nevaeh go." He took another step towards Quincy to further separate himself.

Teddy disagreed with the idea. "Just let Nevaeh go," he said instead. They had fought with Quincy and played practical joke on him. Nevaeh was an innocent bystander.

"Who hurt your sister? It wasn't Teddy or Nevaeh. Let's talk this out." Sammie took one last step forward. He was directly in front of Quincy. The gun was practically touching his chest. One pull of the trigger and he would be gone.

"Think about your future. Mine just flashed before my eyes. You can walk away from this without an issue man. We won't say a word about this incident. We can pretend it never happened. You can go your way and we'll go ours."

Sammie saw that Quincy was wavering on the decision. So he tried another tactic.

"Look at the girl, you loved her once. Do you really want hurt her?" Sammie said pointing at Nevaeh. "And yes you and I have fucked around with each other but I think it's time to squash it. We're all getting older man. It's time to grow up. There's a room full of people. Even if you can kill the three of us someone is bound to see you. Do you really want to spend the rest of your life in prison?"

    "Fuck no," Quincy agreed.

"Pretty niggas like us won't last long in prison," Sammie said with a laugh. Cracking the joke worked and Quincy chuckled.

He lowered his arm and pointed the gun towards the ground. "I was determined to kill you."

Sammie took another few steps. "I understand. What I did was fucked up but it this isn't worth it. Your sister will probably be over me next week. Don't do something that's gonna make a permanent decision on your life."

"You're right. I let my feelings get the best of me."

Sammie was standing right in front of Quincy now. He reached his hand out to shake Quincy's. "Truce?"

    "Yeah."

Teddy and Nevaeh who had been quiet for the last few minutes were able to breathe a sigh of relief. Quincy attempted to shake Sammie's hand with his left hand but felt awkward so he went to transfer the firearm from his right hand to left but in the process he lost the grip of the gun. Before anyone could grasp the situation the gun hit the ground and fired.

Teddy covered Nevaeh's body with his own. Quincy in an attempt to avoid being shot moved and as a result fell into the pool. He touched his body to find any wound and came up empty handed.

The same was true for Nevaeh and Teddy. They hadn't been hit.

"Sammie, are you okay?"  Her heels tapped against the concrete as she approached him. Grabbing his shoulders, she turned him around to face her. "Sammie?"

Sammie who had been gripping his stomach dropped to the ground. The bullet had missed all of them because he had found home inside of Sammie. On his knees he placed his head against Nevaeh's stomach. "I love you," he said before closing his eyes. The pain was unbearable. His insides were burning as he felt his body shutdown.

Nevaeh held onto his head and looked at Teddy. "Call 911!"

An: This part was initially supposed to be something totally different but because of all of the violence and crime that is happening in the world right now I couldn't write it. As a result I'll be going back and changing that first chapter.

There's one more part left. I know this one was short. Sorry I had to end it there. I'll make the next part extra long. Plan is for the story to be finished by this weekend. Xoxoxo
