Graduation:
Holy shit. I examined my graduation gown in the mirror, my simple make up still done to perfection. Soon I arrive at school, walking into the hall and seated by teachers.
Grace was saying a speech and she was beyond nervous, she had been practicing 24/7. She was a good public speaker so she had nothing to worry about.
She walked up to the podium and tested the mic before speaking "Good afternoon fellow students, teachers, staff, overly emotional parents, annoying brothers and sisters, grandparents who can not believe Sydney is this hot, and people who walked in here thinking there was a basketball game. I hope to inspire you with the speech I have prepared today. Some of you may smile, some of you may cry, but I especially hope to make the woman doing sign language laugh at least once!
All these years of mediocracy and refusing to think outside the box have finally paid off for us average students. We who have continued to prove that procrastination and apathy are not just big words but also a way of life." A wave of laughter passed through the crowd
"This speech is for the professors that think Wikipedia is the greatest invention of man kind. Without which we would not have all the knowledge that we do today. For our parents who nag us 24/7 to get on with our work. Without which we would not be receiving our diplomas in 5-10 minutes depending on how long the principal decided to speak for this year. For the friends that have been there for all of us. Through thick at thin. Without which we would not be the people we are today. Some of you I met in year seven, or even before that. Some of you I met this year. But without you this wouldn't be the class of 2018 that it is now. Looking back to year seven. It honestly does feel like it was yesterday. The first class, the first test, the first teacher, the first friend. The point is that we all came to this school, knowing little of what we would become or what we will accomplish. But we will leave now knowing who we are. And that is a gift to be treasured and remembered.
Society teaches us to reach for wealth and fame. For the Australian dream. But that is not for the average. The average is the parent driving us to school everyday so that their child can maybe have a better life than the one they had. Average is the professor that teaches us that knowing who you are and owning your own sense of identity will not only make you a better individual here but more importantly in life. Average is knowing that you don't receive respect, you earn it. And if you are given an opportunity, you fight for it and if anyone tries to tell you different they're lying. Average is one of the greatest things in the world and I know that today is supposed to be celebrating our graduation but we also need to celebrate the people around us the people who helped shape us into who we are now. Today represents a new beginning for all of us, and I thank you. I encourage you, no I employ you, to thank them to. Thank your friends, your teachers your family, even thank the lunch ladies. Then celebrate the beginning, together as we look ahead into the future do not forget the lessons of the past, remember people .You know why I'm talking about, out there, out in the real world. We were asked when we were little what we wanted to be when we were older, we replied with a princess or a astronaut. When we were in primary school we were asked what we wanted to be when we were older, we replied with a dancer or a builder. When we were in high school we where asked what we wanted to be, we then replied with a doctor or an athlete. Once again we were asked this year what we wanted to do with our lives, the answer... Who the hell knows? My point is that we change as we grow, as we gain knowledge, skills, hobbies and friends. The outside world influences what we want to do with our lives, the outside world prepares us for the adventure ahead of us known as life.
But it would be my honour to step forth in this adventure with you all by my side. Now for my last point instead of saying something cliche or corny about this school being a stepping stone in the journey of our lives. I want to leave you all with a quote from a personal hero of mine Samantha Green. She told me this two years ago when we had just become friends and I was scared to jump into the freezing lake she said "don't be a pussy grace."
Let that freezing lake be our lives and don't be scared to jump in. Thank you so much class of 2018 for making this experience amazing!" The crowd literally went wild screaming whistling and cheering, soon to be died down by the principal.
"Ok get your cameras ready we are now heading out the diplomas!" He says
He reads out name after name, I was next....
"Samantha Green!"
I walk towards him, shaking his hand and receiving my diploma, Chris, Ethan, Jakob and Grace, as well as my mum and Jordan screaming their heads off. I felt heat rise to my cheeks as some of the crowd laughed at their excitement. I walked off the stage an soon enough to he had finished giving out all the diplomas.
"From all the staff here we wish you all the best in the future. Here's to the class of 2018!" He says
We all throw our hats into the air. This day couldn't have gone better. Or so i thought....
