I was walking to home room Monday, when I was stopped by an annoying red head stood in front of me.
"What do you want Claire?" I asked annoyed.
"I was thinking," she slowly dragged a finger down my chest, "maybe later..."
"No," I removed her hand from my chest, "not happening. Ever."
I walked away hoping that she would never bother me again. I decided I didn't want to be closed up in a classroom all day and took a detour to the back of the school. I pulled a cigarette out and lit it.
I was thinking about Zerena and our fight and our deal when she walked out of the back of the school.
"Thought I'd find you here," she gave a shy smile and sat beside me. "What's up?"
"The sky," I answered drily.
"Alright hard crowd," she joked and I chuckled but my smile was gone as fast as it appeared. "What's bothering you?" She bumped my shoulder with hers.
"You."
"Well that's comforting."
I laughed heartedly, "kidding. Sort of. I'd been thinking about this past weekend a lot. Our fight. And our deal."
"What about it? Like c'mon buddy, you know I'm only so smart."
I laughed, "I think you're a genius."
"Well I'm flattered. But you still gotta answer my question."
"Damn." Pause. "I was thinking about my feelings for you. How finding out that you hated me hurt me. I was thinking about how our deal made me happy and warm inside. I felt better."
She didn't answer right away and when she did, she said, "well, I gotta be honest, I did not see that coming. But I guess I understand it. I mean look at me, I'm gorgeous." She joked.
"That you are," I agreed in truth, staring beautiful into her beautiful blue eyes.
"What do you see in me?" She whispered, "I mean I'm no Taylor Swift. I'm really not that pretty, or nice, or social."
"That's where I think you're wrong. Your beautiful, smart, talented..."
"Talented? At what? Falling?"
That made me smile, "singing."
"You've never heard me sing. I sound like a dying hippo."
"I practically grew up with you. I've heard you sing. You have a beautiful voice, like an angel."
"Well now you're just flattering me."
"You know it."
She smiled and gave a soft chuckle, "in truth I never really hated you. I was jealous."
"I know. I could tell by what you said when you were telling me why you hated me."
She scoffed, "oh well thanks for letting me know."
"Your welcome," I teased.
It went silent for a few minutes and I looked up at the sky, "Zerena?"
"Ya?"
I sighed, "nevermind." I stood up, "we should probably get to class."
I helped her up and started walking away. She grabbed my hand, "wait."
I looked over my shoulder at her, "what?"
"What were you gonna say?"
"I can't remember."
"Don't lie to me."
I sighed, "I was going to ask you out."
"What's stopping you?"
I deadpanned, "not a what. A who. And you know who."
"Forget about him and his stupid opinion. If you want to ask me out then man up and do it."
"I can't do that and you know it. It has nothing to do with my courage. I just don't want your brother pissed at me. He's the only person I got that's not breathing down my neck."
"That's not true. I'm here."
"And I know that. But..."
"But you don't want to hurt him." She finished for me.
I nodded, "ya."
"I get it. He's all I got, I would hate myself if I hurt him."
I placed my hands on either side of her face and looked into her eyes, "don't ever do that. Don't ever hate yourself. You have too many people who would feel like shit if something happened to you. Plus you wouldn't be very fun if you hated yourself. You'd be all depressed and boring."
She smiled, "I won't, I can't be boring anyway. It's just not part of my DNA," she joked.
I smiled at her and dropped my hands before I kissed her. "We should go before your brother comes searching for us."
"That's probably a good idea."
I turned around and froze, "hey Seth."
"Don't 'hey' me. What do you think you're doing?"
"That depends..."
"Seth calm your tits. Nothing happened. I was just coming to find him since he wasn't in class," Zerena interrupted me, "we were just talking."
"It didn't look like it was just talking," he snapped.
"Damn Seth! You'd think you'd have a little more trust in your best friend and sister! I'm pretty sure we would tell you if we started going out! Or if we're friends with benefits!" She yelled throwing her hands in the air for emphasis, "Seth I know you have trust issues, and I know who's fault that is, but that's no reason to not trust the people who you grew up with and know as well as you know yourself. If we say nothing happened then nothing happened. I promise you that if something ever does happen, you will be the first to know." And with that she walked away.
His face and posture softened, "she's right. I'm sorry man. I'm just so protective of her."
"You guys are siblings, twins, and your parents are never home. I can imagine why you wouldn't trust someone. Just learn to trust her and me. You're all we got." And with that I walked back into the school and towards my next class.
