Two months later

I was sitting in my room watching TV when someone knocked on my front door. Who's knocking on my door at eleven fucking thirty at night? I opened the door, "ya?"

I looked up to see a really freaked out Zerena and Seth. "Dad home?"

They nodded vigorously. "Alright. Come on in."

We had a sort of pact. When their dad came home, they came here; when my parents got to annoying, I went to their house. Their dad could sometimes be abusive and he scared the shit out of everyone around him. So whenever he was home Seth and Zerena came here to avoid the evident wrath of their father.

"You guys know where everything is. Make yourself at home. And yada yada yada." I waved my hand at them and went back to my room with Seth on my heels. He always stayed on my couch and Zerena took the guest room. They each had a small area in my house where they kept a few things like clothes, money, etc. and the best part was my parents didn't care.

Seth walked into my room and I headed to the guest room. I popped my head in the door, "you ok?"

She nodded, "I'll be fine. I just really need to stay away from my father." She turned her head to look at me making her hair fall to one side. She was wearing a shirt that hung low on her back so when her hair moved you could see her scar. Her dad gave it to her three years ago. He hit her with a broken glass bottle and it got jammed in her back. Seth and I walked in just as she screamed out in pain.

I shook my head a little to get rid of the memory. "How's your back doing?"

"It's better. It doesn't hurt as much as it used to when I stretch," she smiled at me, "thanks."

"For what? I didn't do anything," I shrugged.

"Yes you did," she walked over to me, "you let Seth and I stay in your home, you let us eat your food without helping out in getting more or making the meals, and every time I get hurt you're there to help. You do something, whether you know it or not." She hugged me, "so thank you."

I hugged her back, "what else am I gonna do? You guys are my only friends, if I let anything happen to you I'd be lonely." I kissed the top of her head.

She laughed at my words, "you're so mean."

"It's what I do. It strengthens you."

"How?"

"Well if I'm mean to you and you can handle it then next time someone else is mean to you, you can handle it."

She giggled, "god you're so weird."

I shrugged, "I try."

I pulled away, "alright. You get some rest. I'm gonna go check on Seth."

"I'm sure he's waiting," she joked.

I laughed as I walked out of the room. I opened the door to my room and plopped on my bed, "how long is he planning on staying?" I asked Seth.

"About a month," Seth answered.

"Damn. I'm sorry."

"For what? It's not your fault."

"Ya whatever."

Thanksgiving break was this week, thankfully, so Seth, Zerena, and I hung out around the house all day. We played board games and watched movies until the sun went down. Then we played truth or dare.

"Truth or dare?" Our friend Cody asked Zerena.

"Truth," she smiled.

"Baby," he teased, "umm." He contemplated this while, "got it. Do you like Dean?"

"Dare," she quickly said.

"I dare you to kiss Dean," he said.

She quickey turned to me and pecked my lips. "Nope. That's a peck, I wanna see a kiss happen," Cody smirked.

She grunted, turned back to me and she leaned closer. I lowered my head to match her level. Her lips met mine and fireworks flew everywhere. She pulled back, blushed, and looked away. I smirked at her reaction.

"Hey beautiful. Wanna try that agin later?" I whispered in her ear in a teasing tone.

She blushed even harder and slapped my arm, "stop it."

"I knew it! You do like him!" Cody accused her.

She gave a slight nod. "Alright, enough with the lovey dovey faces. Let's just get on with the game," Seth grumbled.

I smirked at his disgusted facial expression and slapped his back. "Grow up and play the game like a normal teenager," I teased.

"There's nothing normal about me," he smirked.

"That's very true."

"Seth truth or dare?" Zerena interrupted.

The week flew by in a flash and school came rushing around the corner. After school Zerena had left something in her room at home. I gave her a ride to her house and waited outside like she told me to.

I waited for half an hour before I heard an ear piercing scream. I rushed inside and found Zerena on the floor with a bloody nose and black eye and her dad standing over her with a murderous look in his eyes. I pushed him aside and helped her up.

"You shouldn't have done that boy," her father warned me.

I pushed her behind me and got into a protective stance. "Wanna bet?"

"No Dean. Don't," Zerena tried to pull me away.

"Listen to the girl Dean," he warned.

"The girl?! You mean your daughter?! What are you gonna do anyway?" I yelled.

He jumped at me and I pushed him back and punched him in the face. I heard a sickening pop as my fist connected with his nose, I think I broke it. Good! I smiled broadly at that thought.

I turned to Zerena and hugged her, "come on baby. Let's go home," I let her go and took her hand. We walked away with me keeping her in front of me until we reached the car.

"Get what you need?" I asked.

"Ya," she breathed.

"You ok?"

"Fine."

"So you're not ok. Thanks for telling the truth."

"No problem," she laughed a little.

"Music to my ears."

She blushed, "stop it."

"No. You're too adorable when you blush." I said with a straight face.

She blushed harder, "thanks."

"No problem," I smiled.

I caught her staring at me, "like what you see?"

Her face was red as a tomato by now, "ya," she whispered. I chuckled.
