  "What's going on here?"

  Zerena and I jumped apart at the sound of Seth's voice.

  "Well...um...you see..." I stuttered.

  "He was teaching me how to skateboard," she smiled.

  "Oh really?" He crossed his arms over his chest and stared me down.

  "Well she asked," I stood my ground.

  "Uh huh," he clucked his tongue, "anyway I just got a call from dad."

"What'd he say?" Zerena started to slightly tremble at the mention of her father.

"He's gone. He had to leave early because something went wrong with the project or whatever," he rolled his eyes.

"So we can go home now?" A small smile played at her lips.

Seth smiled and nodded a yes.

"Yes! Finally!" She jumped up and down.

"Wow I feel so loved," I said sarcastically.

"No offense but your house is kinda lame," Zerena smiled at me.

"I can understand that," I shrugged.

"Z go get your stuff," Seth ordered.

"Ok," she grinned.

She quickly ran off to get her things.

Seth glared at me, "dude I was only teaching her how to board. I literally didn't do anything wrong. So stop glaring at me," I snapped.

"Whatever," he growled and stocked off.

I groaned. I'm telling you that kid is as stubborn as a boulder.

~~~
  It's been 4 months since Zerena and Seth went back home after their dad leaving. The schools winter dance was coming up and everyone was talking about it. Even all my teachers. I'm about ready to punch someone.
  "Hey Dean!" Zerena waves as she passed me in the hall.
  I smile and wave back at her. I wanted to ask her to the dance but I knew Seth would never allow it and probably kill me if I did it behind his back.
  I walked into my homeroom and sat next to Seth.
  "I got a question," I asked him. I knew it would probably get me killed but oh well.
  "Shoot," he answered without looking up at me and breaking concentration on his drawing.
  "May I ask your sister to the winter dance?" I spoke fast hoping he wouldn't care about what I said and just nod his head.
  "No," he said.
  "Come on Seth," I complain, "we all know I'm the only guy who can go out with her without you trying to kill me, one. Two, I really really like her. Please." I begged him.
  He grumbled some incoherent words and looked up at me, "fine. But lay a finger on her and I will personally rip out your nerves and arteries with my bare hands."
"Glad to know you still love me," I give a sarcastic smile.
"Don't be such a girl," he grumbles.
I laugh at him and pull out my book.
~~~

Once the lunch bell rang I walked to my car and drove to the flower shop. I bought a single white rose with colors splattered on it.

I went back to school and sat odwn across from Zerena at her table with all her friends.

"Hey Z," I smiled.

"Hey. What's up?" She grinned back, "my brother didn't do anything stupid again, did he?"

I chuckled, "not that I know of," I paused, "I have a question for you."

"Shoot," she said as she took a large bite out of her burger.

"Kay well this wasn't it but where the hell do you put all that food? I've known you all our lives and I still can't figure it out," I asked in astonishment.

She laughed, "no stomach, just a bottomless pit."

"Seems reasonable," I shrugged, "anyway." I pulled the flower from the inside pocket of my jacket where I had put it in hoped of not hurting it but keeping it hidden, "will you go to the winter dance with me? I already asked your brother and after a little complaining on his side and some begging on my side, he said it was ok."

She thought about it for a moment, then a mischievous smile crept onto her face, "hmm I dunno. I mean I totally could but will I?" She tapped her chin with her index finger.

"Zerena stop screwing with me," I leaned in close and whispered, "I know where you sleep at night."

Her face paled. Last time I used that warning I filled a tub with ice and placed her in it, outside, in the winter.

"Yes, sure, I will be your date to the dance, just don't do anything to me," she blurted.

I chuckled, "love you Z," and got up.

"Love you too Dean," I heard her say as I walked away.
