She turned to the crowd, "why do you think he's never mentioned my brother or I?! It's because he doesn't want you to know about the scars he's left! Look!" She turned around and yanked her shirt down far enough to show her scar, "my father," she spat the word, "gave this to me three years ago when he got drunk and angry! He threw a broken beer bottle at me and it landed in my back. I had to go to the hospital to get it removed and had twenty stitches. Sometimes it still hurts to move a certain way because of it."

She pulled her shirt up and turned back to Darik and spat his name like she wasn't allowed to say it like Voldemort in Harry Potter, "Darik is nothing but an arrogant, selfish, bastard," she stared down Darik, "and you all need to leave because this is no longer his house. He'll be packing his things and leaving. As soon as possible."

"Now Zerena, we don't want to make any rash decision," he tried to reach for her. She pulled back and I pushed her behind me.

"Unless you want anther broken nose, I wouldn't touch her," I spat in his face.

He grimaced and cleared out the house. He turned back to Zerena, "run," he glared angrily.

"Dean let's leave," she whispered and pulled on my arm.

"No, we came her to get rid of him. Let's finish it," I whispered back. "We're not going anywhere. It's you who'll be leaving, and never returning. I hope your company burns in hell with you."

Darik lunged for me and I grabbed Zerena, jumping out of the way and swinging a punch at Darik. It landed on his jaw and his head snapped back.

"You shouldn't have done that," he said.

"What are you gonna do? Hit me?" I punched him again in the nose, "Zerena go pack Darik's stuff and throw it off the property. I'll get him," she nodded and I kicked Darik in the stomach. That knocked him back and I punched him in the temple. He faltered and I punched again, he fell back, unconscious.

"I got his stuff," Zerena came around the corner.

"And I got him," I threw Darik over my shoulder and walked out to the edge of the property. I tossed him and Zerena tossed his stuff onto the ground and we changed the code to the gate.

We walked back to her house and she sunk to the floor, "I can't believe I did that," she said, her expression blank.

I sat beside her and she curled up on my lap. "Hey, look at the bright side. He's gone. You can stay at home and relax and not worry about him."

Her phone rang just as she was about to answer. She looked at the screen and her face lit up. She answered it, putting it on speaker, "hey mom."

"Zerena why is the gate not opening and why is your father knocked out on the ground?" Her mother rushed out.

Zerena laughed, "funny story. I'll tell you once you get inside. The code is the day you got your job."

  "Why is it that?"

"Because it's something Darik will never try because he doesn't know it."

Her mom sighed, "alright then. See you in a sec."

Zerena hung up and hugged me, "thank you."

"Anytime," I hugged her back and kissed her forehead.

The front door opened and her mother came in. She froze at seeing Zerena and I on the floor.

"What are you two doing? Nevermind don't answer that. How are you guys? Everything alright?" She asked.

"I'm doing fine, Mrs. Carter..." I started.

"Hey! Dean I've known since you were a baby, stop with the mrs. It's just Sarah," we warned.

I chuckled, "alright, just Sarah," she playfully glared at me and Zerena and I laughed, "anyway..."

"I kicked dad out," Zerena quickly said.

"You what?" Sarah asked in disbelief.

"I kicked dad out," Zerena said slower.

Sarah took a minute to digest the news before she took us both by surprise, "oh finally. I've been wanting to rid of that man for ages. I've already got the papers for him to sign so we're legally divorced."

"Really?" Zerena's face lit up and she smiled big.

Sarah nodded, "Darik stopped being my husband and the man I fell for when his company took off."

"Oh mom," Zerena got out of my lap and hugged her mother.

They cried together for a minute before Seth came racing in.

  "What happened?" He asked.

I looked at him, "a lot," I stood up.

He nodded and hugged his mother as sister. I waited patiently for them, though it was a pretty awkward to just stand there.

"Wait," Sarah pulled back a bit and stretched an arm towards me, "you helped out so get over here."

I smiled at them and joined the hug. I honestly didn't like hugging all that much. My parents were never around and when they were, they were arguing.  So hugging wasn't exactly something I did. I was ok to hug Zerena but I just loved to hold her close.

We pulled away from each other. "Alrighty then. I'm hungry. How about you guys?" Sarah smiled.

We all nodded and she headed off to the kitchen. I followed her to give Zerena and Seth some time. I walked into the kitchen and Sarah smiled at me knowingly.

"So are you dating my daughter yet?" She asked.

  "Yes," I said with confidence.

She gave a huge grin, "finally! I've been waiting for Seth to let up."

"He wasn't too happy at first. I asked him if I could take her to the dance, as you know, and after that it just happened," I felt comfortable with talking to Sarah about it. I know she's my girlfriend's mom but she's also my best friend's mom.

"Well isn't that lovely," she smiled.

We continued to talk as we made food for everyone and eventually Zerena and Seth joined us. We ended up baking brownies and cookies and flour and batter got everywhere. It was amazing. Family was something everyone needs wether they want it or not. It was great to know that I have such a family, even though it wasn't blood, they were family. Cheesy huh.
