"You're dating?" exclaimed Usami in disdain.
Akashi eyed her.
"Is there a problem with that?"
Usami avoided his eyes by looking down at the board.
It had been thirty minutes into the game and Usami still couldn't see why Akashi had wanted her to play against Chiharu.
She obviously would win.
As she moved her rook, she looked up at the peach-haired girl. Aside from Chiharu's chest, she couldn't see any positive qualities in this clutz. Usami still couldn't forget how she had carelessly bumped into her in the morning.
How could Akashi be dating a girl like this?
Another 10 minutes later, Usami started dozing off, from the unending game.
She was surprised that she hadn't already won but still, she could play all night if she wanted to.
She never lost.
She looked back at the board. Her eyes widened to find no more possible moves.
How had that occurred?
Just minutes ago, she had been sure she would win.
She looked at Chiharu, furious, but faltered momentarily from Chiharu's serious expression. Usami felt played; she had underestimated her opponent. Of course Akashi wouldn't have chosen her for no reason.
"A rematch!" she declared. "I wasn't focusing on the game! Next time I will win!"
Akashi frowned.
"Usami, you lost because you were careless. Chiharu has natural talent. Give up."
Usami trembled, her lip curled down in disdain. Against Akashi, she had no more words.
...
Usami strutted by the school corridors.
She thought back to the Shogi game she had played. Despite not focusing, no one had ever been able to beat her in Shogi, Akashi excepted.
She pouted.
And Akashi just had to be there too.
She heard pattering feet from behind her and turned around.
"Usami-chan, here is the competition date for the Shogi tournament!" cried Chiharu, running up to the pale green-haired figure.
"I don't like you. Don't call me that," Usami replied, pouting.
Chiharu chuckled.
Despite Usami's annoying behaviour, she could see why Akashi treated her like he did. It was simply because Usami was like a little kid. Although she was annoying, you could never hate her.
Usami grabbed at the paper Chiharu had held out to her.
She lifted an eyebrow at the date.
"Only one day?"
Chiharu shrugged.
"It's already the second school term. It's too late to participate in the actual Shogi tournament so it seems we are playing an exhibition match against the previous winners."
Usami looked away.
"Hmph! What about Sei-kun?!" she exclaimed.
"Seijuro has to practice basketball for the Winter Cup," replied Chiharu.
