"I am fully convinced that this is a breach of contract and I'd like to sue the company"
The woman sitting across me, face pleasant and friendly, but had a blunt, sharp, voice. A voice that meant business, a voice you wouldn't dare to question. This voice was something I lacked, the firmness, the authority dripping from each sentences I longed to have. But it's such a miracle that this voice of mine had never resulted in me losing a case, and debates. When I was still studying law I never sounded convincing but I always won. You can call that luck but I believe I'm highly favoured.
So while the woman keeps talking about the tiling company who didn't do a good job in her bathroom, she wanted them neat and tidy but it seems like they had gone contrary to what she wanted. She called to complain but the company dismissed her complaints.
"You can't imagine such disrespect. They told me that it was nicely done and there's nothing they can do about it"
"Do you have a written contract, ma"
"Of course I do " She reached into her bag.
I massaged my temples. I was still adjusting to civil law cases, which I haven't really found interest in as a criminal lawyer. But after the case where lawyers were being killed these days like animals because of how threatening they look, I was advised to take civil cases for now until things were back to normal.
"Here you go" . As I skimmed through the papers, I feel a slight pain at the right side of my head. Signs of a migraine later on.
The door opens. It was my secretary, Debra."Your husband is here to see you, ma'am. I told him you had a client". The client didn't seem bothered.
"Where is he?"
"The entrance. He looks like he's in a hurry"
"I'll be there in a few"
I excused myself from my office and went downstairs to where Jacob, my husband stood. His tall frame stood by the doorway. I walked up to him, smiling
"I thought you were supposed to be at a conference"
He smiled back and kissed me.
"It's been postponed by two hours. But I needed to see you. Someone called this morning asking for you. It seemed urgent"
"Male or female "
"Female. She said her name was Joyce, your aunt. I guess. I wanted you to have her number" Aunt Joyce, someone I didn't really relate to during my childhood years but someone I had grown to love during my teenage years because she could relate to me on so many levels. A sense of nostalgia swept through me.
I began to laugh. "You could messaged me"
"It's worth the drive to see your beautiful face"
I smiled and turned away, still feels amazing that after 6 years he still makes me shy.
"I have to get back to my client. She's quite intimidating." I made to turn away, but he dragged me back by the arm.
"No goodbye kiss?" He said. I rolled my eyes.
"No" I smirked. But we both knew I wouldn't just leave him hanging. Such a corny man.
His phone rang. "It's the hospital, they need me. See you later, babe"
I stood by the door and watched him leave, before I adjusted my glasses and went back to my client.
She didn't seem bothered by my absence, in fact, she was deeply engrossed in the magazine she was reading.
