Chapter Eighteen

My period came one morning. I was feeling kind of weird and wet but I ignored it.

I got up again, in the early hours of the morning. I checked the time on the clock. 5:49am. Daniel moved beside me. I turned on the light and realised that there was blood everywhere. Oh my goodness.

I was already beginning to doubt that it would actually come, because I did hear that if you haven't had your period at sixteen then something must be wrong. But I wasn't really bothered anyway. Luckily I slept far off from the bed so it didn't really touch Daniel. I had to get Daniel off the bed. He stared in confusion, and I made him to go to the upstairs living room, just for the main time. I stripped off my bed sheets and took it to the bathroom to wash, the washing machine was too far away. While washing, a familiar feel came to me.

The blood. The freaking blood.

No Hadassah, forget. You forget these things happened. You forget the pains he caused you. You don't let it burn all over.

As I take the bucket downstairs, I look up at the sky as the day breaks. The sun comes up slowly. Although I can't see much with the mountains of houses beyond, but I know that it really is beautiful. In later years, when choosing houses for myself I make sure to have a window right where I can see the sun go up and come down. Those moments I pick up a pen and I write.

I quickly recover and I hang out the clothes I washed.

No this is not such a good day. No one can explain the volumes of pain I'm going through right now.

I'm in bed, twisting and turning, weak from the cramps. Sara visited that day and smiled when she sees me.

"Welcome to womanhood, girl" She joked.

I roll my eyes. "This is not funny. You mean to tell me that you experience this every month. Oh my gosh"

She pats my back. "Well it does show that you're healthy"

Healthy, my foot. "What are you even saying?"

"Ahan. Weren't you listening when they taught Menstruation in Home Economics?"

I put my hand up. "Abeg"

Aunt Joyce came into the room, holding a tray. The smile on her face is annoying at this point.

"And how's our new Woman doing"

Okay, can they get over the woman nonsense now. Mum has also been saying this since and they don't know how annoying it sounds.

"Eat this. And take the medicine, you're actually supposed to see this like a day before your period comes but anyway it's not your fault. Just saying this for next time" She hands the Feldene tablets to me.  "It's cheap even. Hundred Naira at the nearby pharmacy"

Of course I would take it for next time. For me to experience this again, never.

After Aunt Joyce left Sara smiled at me.

"So where's your new phone?" She asked.

I reached up and gave it to her. She admired it. She was busy saying that my phone was like the latest model, and then we spoke to Yasmin briefly. She was in Dubai for the vacation. The pain eased up a little bit.

"Anyway Tope and I are an item now" She said, blushing. I blinked. Wow then that must mean something.

"Hmm" I sighed. "Do you really like each other?"

She looks at me like I've asked the most stupid question on earth. "Well, of course. I really do like him. And he asked me out yesterday"

I went through the chat. "Maybe he really does like you. Not just for your body"
