Disclaimer:
This was written when I was 15/16 years old. Please excuse any cliche themes, cringe-worthy beginnings and overall terrible writing that I've got to say I'm embarrassed to read! I was young and it was my first ever attempt at writing a story!

"Come on Sophia we are going to be late for our shifts if you don't get your arse out of bed and get in the shower I will pour freezing water on you!" Jasmine my best friend and roommate screamed at the top of her lungs.

"I'm up, I'm up, geez we aren't even going to be late we still have..." I glanced at the clock located on my bedside table "..half an hour and it's only a 5-minute walk" I groaned as I lifted my pillow and covered my head with it to block out the noise.

"Sophiaaaaa," she pleaded shaking me "You know I like seeing that cute newspaper guy, we have a thing going."

I immediately shifted my head from under the pillow and looked at her with a 'are you kidding me' glare "Jas you have never spoken, and he is like 5 years younger than you,"

"One can dream you know, besides he's 18 and extremely mature" She piped up giving me a sly wink then grabbed her pillow and hit me with it "Now get your ass into the shower,"

"Urghh" I replied dragging myself into the bathroom. Purposely taking a little longer than I usually would in the shower just to annoy Jas. I then not so quickly dressed in my work uniform and we left with 10 minutes to get to work.

I am one of the most unorganised people in the whole world which is why Jasmine always manages the time otherwise I would never get anywhere on time, especially as I always snooze my alarm in the mornings. Just like any other normal 24-year-old, I set multiple alarms 10 minutes apart so that I will be awake, yet that never seems to work.

Jasmine and I worked the same shifts at a small diner near our apartment called Joey's. It was one of my favourite places to be, it seemed as if all of the drama in New York would vanish, as soon as you stepped through the light blue door. Joey's has a chilled atmosphere and regular customers who eat breakfast here most days before they go off to work.

I don't know all of the customers personally instead I give them all nicknames. There is one man who looks around the age of 40 with a bushy beard and is always wearing a hi-vis jacket and a flannel shirt. I think he works on a building site of sorts but I nicknamed him Lumberjack.

Very rarely were there new customers passing through, but that's what I liked about my job, although it didn't pay much I enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their stories. Especially as everyone I have met has different ones, and each unique story fascinates me. One man went from nothing to his own successful business, and another just married. Lumberjack, however, every day tells me he is still at the site and is no closer to his dream of being a dancer.

As soon as we got to work Jasmine went to the kitchen, as she was one of the waiters and I began clearing the tables. We hadn't had a new customer in a few weeks until a small, petite woman dressed in a black pantsuit with heels and beautiful straight silver hair walked in looking rather frustrated.

I waited for one of the waiting staff to take her order but none did, this was my time to shine. Maybe I will get promoted to waiting staff like Jasmine had a couple months prior, instead of just cleaning tables.

"Hello, my name is Sophia what can I get you," I asked the businesswoman unsure of the proper way to take someone's order. The woman held her finger up to me, and then raised her other hand moved a piece of her silver hair, which was covering her ear and tapped her earpiece.

My cheeks flushed red with embarrassment and I slowly walked away dreading the moment she finishes her phone call. I guess I won't be getting a tip then.
