Chapter 15: Finding out

One week later

It was a long and painstaking walk back from the V hideout, Kaneki had visited to make sure everything was going smoothly, they were in an absence of a leader, but the group was getting by without him. They had asked him if he could come back as their boss, he had almost caved in, but he had needed to get out of the building, there had been too many familiar faces and when they asked if Kai could come back to be the leader, he told them why he couldn't, but not the cause of it. While most people thought gangs were unstable, violent and toxic communities, they were right, but the upper workings were a tight knit group that would not waver. They were all people without families and people that loved them, it was a great shock that hurt them deeply when he had delivered the news of Kai's death.

His own grieving had not ceased in the slightest, no matter what the silver lining, positive spin he put into it, he knew it was ultimately his own fault. No matter what reason Kai could have had for self-sacrificing himself, Kaneki knew if he had not wanted to even go to the raid, nothing would have happened. It was almost humorous to him because they had not accomplished anything by going to the raid except achieving Ayato, who he had found out, was coming back soon afterward.

Kai had done some backroom dealings and orders that he had not known anything about, he was determined to find out, though, as he thought it was most likely the reason why Touka had been avoiding him after the second time he woke up. She kept stealing glances at him worriedly and it was making him stressed out and curious as is to what she was hiding from him.

He had made it back to Anteiku as he stepped out of the weathering rain and into what he now could call home.

Nishiki looked up from cleaning the counter when he heard the door open and customarily glared at him. "Hey Kaneki, you're back finally, get upstairs, Yoshimura wanted to talk to you."

Without a response he walked upstairs to his apartment to get changed from his wet clothes and yelped in surprise as the manager was sitting at his desk silently, a folder in his hands.

"This will just take a moment Kaneki, take this, I think you were meant to have it." He thrust the folder full of papers into Kaneki's hands and left the room in an instant.

Kaneki looked at the retreating figure oddly before setting the folder on his desk, he changed and got a cup of coffee before sitting down to read its contents. What he read on the first page made him set down his cup of coffee with a shaking hand, whether it was quivering with anger or with fear he did not know. What was in the folder was details even he had forgotten about his time with Jason, pictures, descriptive paragraphs, everything.

He slowly looked through every page of the file and came the last page of the folder, it was an envelope that read. "To Kaneki," with a big smiley face below the block letter font.

Dear my ever so precious Kaneki,

Hey buddy, it's Kai here, just letting you know, Touka knows know. I'm not sorry I showed her this and if you are reading this I've either left or I'm dead. I told her to talk to you about it when she wanted to reveal that she knew, I really hope you don't take it out on her. I gave her these files because when I found out I thought it was trivial and pointless for you to hold back from telling us. Hope you aren't too mad at me, if you are I won't be around to receive the punishment, at least I shouldn't be.
