She was really tired and just wanted to come home, lay on her bed and sleep the rest of the day. Sometimes the nightmares she had exhausted her so much that she barely kept her eyes open throughout the day. But she never told anyone, she never wanted to bother people with her problems. People who were close to her would often try to pull the words out of her, but the burden she carried on her shoulders was too risky to share.
She finally came home and yelled from the hallway: - I'm here!
-Oh good, you're back home. - her mom walked towards her from the kitchen with a smile on her face which was soon wiped off when she saw the plastic foil wrapped around her daughter's arm. - You've done it again. Vienna, I thought we went through this already.
-Mom, it's just a few more tattoos.
-A few more?! Let me see! - she grabbed her daughter's arm so fast and so tightly that the girl screamed in pain.
-Mom, you're hurting me!
-This is a few more?! Your whole arm is covered in some silly tattoos! This is outrageous!
-Mom...
-I'm calling your father immediately!
-Mom, stop! Look at me. I'm the same little girl I always was, just covered up with art. These tattoos are my stories, you can't take that away from me or blame me for doing it. It's my body and I choose what to do with it.
She slowly approached the nineteen year old girl and slapped her hard across the face.
-We'll talk at lunch. This isn't over. - the woman threatened her. - Go get changed and come in the kitchen in ten.
Vienna threw her skateboard down to the ground from the impact and ran upstairs to cry under the shower where nobody could hear her. Her parents never understood her, her mom especially. Her dad was sort of milder and meek. He tried talking problems out instead of just locking her into her room and taking away everything from her.
It was quiet at lunch until the worried and slightly disappointed look on her father's face let her know it was time to talk.
-Why did you do it? I thought we agreed that there will be no more tattoos.
-But dad-
-And a whole sleeve tattoo! Vienna, what were you thinking? You know people-
-Yeah, yeah, I know. People in college will look at me differently and I will never get hired at a serious workplace, my whole future is in risk... I've been listening to that same story for quite a while now. I know that.
-So, then why are you still doing it?
-Because I can't speak my mind. Because nobody wants to listen! And then I write. I write it all down on my skin, I leave a mark. I love this, dad. This soothes me. The sound of the tattoo gun, the stinging on my skin, the colors splashed all over my body.
The old man sighed. - Vienna, you're behaving irresponsibly. I'm afraid we will have to bring in some serious measures.
-I'm fucking nineteen! I'm an adult! You can't ground me! - this time she yelled in frustration.
-Language, Vienna! - her mother warned again. - Go to your room right now.
-No.
-Excuse me?
-I said NO! - she quickly got up from her chair and while ignoring her parents' calls, she grabbed her leather jacket and launched through the door.
