I was thinking about all the memories I had gotten back, still confused on what to make of it. He had been the one who took my memories away from me. I didn't know how. Or why. And it was killing me on the inside. Should I even trust him?
"Jaaaaaaake." I tried ignoring the sing songy tone I'd come to hate.
"Go away Serket." I heard a whimper as if I had just kicked a puppy. Did I feel bad? Not as much as I probably would have if I weren't so stressed.
"Why do you hate me?" I sighed, slowly stopping my hair twisting irk. I could tell she was sitting by me. This time I was too uptight to care.
"I? Hate you?" she gave what was meant to be a lighthearted laugh but it came off more as cynical. I turned my head slightly, my eyes glancing her over in less annoyance. Something was . . . .off.
"You're right. It's a little silly." I messed up my hair entirely and pushed up my glasses evenly before looking away again. My curiosity was getting the better of me. Don't let her fool you.
"Funny. But actually, Jakey. . .I was wondering what's been going on. I mean I don't ever get to see you now that you hang around Dirk so often." If it weren't for the hidden tone I would've believed she actually cared. I looked at her fully, deciding to pretend to play into whatever game she had in mind. It's not like she was deadly or anything. Although she did remind me of . . .something else. Like a black widow. Or just a poisonous spider in general. She was smiling at me innocently.
"Oh? And you've missed me? Am I hearing this correctly, Serket?" I played the innocence card, observing her reaction. Her smile revealed smaller canines that I hadn't payed attention to before. But the eyes revealed a lot. I could see something else there. . .I couldn't place it. She gave a small giggle at my attention.
"Aww, is The Jacob English worried about me? If anything, you should be worried about something else." Her act didn't fade and I tilted my head, giving my own sweet smile.
"Like what?" for a second I noticed a gleam of something close to familiarity. Like this is something we've done for years. She knew something.
"You'll know sooner or later. Tell Dirk I said hi, wouldya?" She calmly got off of the top of the desk she was sitting on and I watched questioningly as she left. I found myself looking down at my paper, writing down what I knew and what I didn't into the back of my favored journal. There was something else here. I was just one of the last people to know.
