Evening walks down the bustling road with one less breath

Evening walks down the bustling road, bright lights, busy lives,

Air fills with energy, soul, excited chatters, hasty steps.

Under same darkened canopy against same stars, clamorous cars, vitality,

Like a yesterday, the day before or tomorrow.

Boisterous crowds in little diners hungry, relish, live, laugh,

Same menu, vegetable soba, no onions please.

Head back, back towards the river, head towards the sky,

But behind, the boy dives from above high, bridge to blackened waters.

A follower of thousands, young and eager, leaps the rite of passage.

Maybe with a holler, adrenaline through veins, the climax of a summer,

A toast to life makes a final celebration, ahead future bright drowns in one murky moment.

Flail and fail crosses pencils scratch out to-do lists, the you, me, the to be and could have be,

The boy who lives next door lived next door.

People and people, different stretches, different roads,

Converge. Pass. Diverge.

Evening walks down the bustling road, bright lights, busy lives,

Air fills with energy, soul, excited chatters, hasty steps.

But with one less breath.
