we have been on the road non stop since new york, me and ruby have been closer than ever. shes amazing. i dont know how many times ive already said that but it just hard not too.*** ring ring***
"hello?" i answer
"hi is this Ms. Lia Matthews?"
"yes, and who is this?"
"this is teen vogue. and we've been watching through the media you and ruby roses relationship. i was just wondering if youd be interested in an interview?" the woman finishes
"can i get back to you?" i ask
"of course, ill have my assistant email you our contact information."
ive been answering phone calls all week asking for interviews that i havent given answers too. we were only an hour away from washington. i was excited to give ruby my answer in front of my grandma. i called her earlier and she said she wasnt feeling well but she said it was okay for us to come still.
we pulled up to her house with a million ambulances outside and my heart dropped. she was in one connected on to big machines and i was breathing hard i jumped in the red ambulance
"hey! you cant be in here!" a woman yelled hooking more machines in her arm
"im her granddaughter." i say calmly as ruby comes in after me
i grabbed my grandmas hand and held it on my hand as i cry on her brittle little body. her eyes open and i smile through the tears pouring out of my eyes. she slowly cracked a smile back at me and i kiss her hand. we drove quickly to the hospital and i cried the whole way as ruby held me and tried to calm me down.
we arrived at the hospital and we waited in the lobby
and a nurse in blue scrubs came out and said, "family of Marie Sam Matthews." and i stood up ruby behind me. i followed the nurse down two halls and then to a door with my grandma inside. she was awake and talking but she didnt look good.
"hello." she smiles
"hello." i go up to her bed and hug her lightly kissing her cheek.
"can i ask you something? have you seen my granddaughter lia?" she smiles
"wha... grandma its me. lia?" i say confused
"hmm. because i told her it would be alright to visit. and i would just feel so awful if she arrived and i didnt tell her where i was." she says holding my hand.
"grandma. im lia. im here." i try to smile holding back tears
"oh dear, silly me. im so sorry!" she gasps
"its okay, grandma. i want you to meet someone. this is ruby. my girlfriend." i say wiping my tears and ruby walks up to my grandma
"oh, you come here young lady." my grandma talks to ruby
"hello, im ruby. ive heard many great things about you." she shakes my grandmas hand
"you take care of my lia ruby. lia is fragile, she needs someone who will never leave her side. someone who is faithful and helping. someone who she can depend on, you need to make her happy when she cant be. you need to cherish her presence. you need to love her when she doesnt love herself. you need to promise me." she says tearing up
ruby wipes her tears off of her cheeks never leaving the eye contact they had
"i promise." she says nodding her head and kissing my grandmas hand
"please tell lia when she gets here i love her dearly, and give her a kiss for me." she smiles
"of course." ruby said walking back towards me crying into my palms she held me until i had enough strength to go back over to her
"grandma, i just want to tell you im sorry. im sorry i never stood up for you when dad told you to leave. i shouldve and i was scared and i shouldnt have. im sorry im so sorry." i cry on her lap
"i love you lia. i always have and i always will. the girl you brought today, she should make you proud. i like her. be with her." she smiles combing my hair with her brittle fingers
" ill never forget you grandma."
"ill never let you forget me." she chuckles
" i love you grandma."
"i love you more." she says as i kiss her forehead for the last time.
the machine flat lines, and she closes her eyes.
i run into rubys arms and i cry. i let every tear i have in me out. we sat there for as long as we could until the nurse came in to take her body. we sat in the hallway and ruby drew circles on my back. i saw an older woman about my grandmas age run down the hallway crying
"excuse me, is this marie matthews room?" she wipes her tears
ruby answers "yes, but.." the woman walks in the empty hospital room and drops to the floor room
"im too late!" she screams and cries
i get up and ask her if she knew my grandma
"lia?" she wipes her tears and looks me in the eyes
"yes?" i answer confused
"im your grandmothers wife, helen." she cracks a fake smile
"nice to meet you." i smile with a tear running down my cheek.
we cried together and talked about my grandma with ruby never leaving my side.
we left the hospital and i found ashley sitting there waiting for me in the lobby
"oh lia im so sorry! they wouldnt let me back there!" she says as i hug her tightly
"it okay." i whisper not letting go
everyone got back on the bus for the long way home.
