~CHAPTER 9~

Heather and I aren't as close as we used to be. I used to tell her everything. Every single thing that was happening in my life down to the very last detail. And now, I can't even tell her how I feel about Kyle. I guess things aren't meant to stay the same because this life is as fragile as a dream. Nothing's ever really as it seems.

"It's Friday!" Heather exclaimed "we are gonna have so much fun tonight!"

"Yeah.." I force myself to sound excited. I'm not.

"Can you at least stop being in a bitchy mood?" She gives a light punch on my shoulder.

"Shut up Heather, oh my God," I put on a big fake smile for her "here happy?"

"Much better. So what are we gonna do about that Michelle and Kyle crisis?"

"Nothing, we aren't gonna do anything. It's their lives not ours,"

"True but do you really want them to end up together?"

"They can do whatever they want Heather, we don't decide for them."

"Ok ok. Jeez you're being so emotional today,"

"Sorry I'm so frustrated,"

"Um why?"

"No reason..." I didn't want to tell her how worried I am about this party so I change the topic right away "What are you wearing tonight?"

She went on and on about the outfits she's choosing from and how she doesn't know which one to wear. I shouldn't have asked her that question. She talks way too much. When she was finally done talking, we headed towards the cafeteria.

To our left, we saw Michelle against that thick white pole in the middle of the main hallway and Austin so close to her that their legs are already touching. That slut. First Kyle, now Austin?

"Oh my God," Heather screamed

"Heather shut up!" I whispered. As I turn around and slowly walk away.

"Hey Jen!" Michelle calls out my name and I stop walking. I turn around and face both of them.

"We didn't mean to disturb you guys," I say shamefully

"Wait come here for a sec," Heather and I walk to them. Austin was obviously avoiding eye contact. I haven't spoken to him in weeks.

"Um what's up?" I say trying to make a conversation

"Nothing, I was just talking to Austin about- something. Anywho, going to the party tonight?"

When I realized Austin was coming to the party too, I didn't feel like going anymore. This will only make things worst.

"Yes," Heather answered at the same time I said "No."

"What? But you said-" I stop Heather

"No, I don't know. I think I'll pass, I have other plans,"

"No way, you have to go," Michelle insisted "trust me, it'll be a lot of fun."

"But-"

"No buts! You are coming! I don't want you to miss it."

"Ok fine," I roll my eyes

"Yes!" She hugs me tightly and let's go, "oh I almost forgot, I have to meet up with Mr. Manobi! Austin call me after school, I gotta go. Bye guys"

"Bye." All three of us replied as we watch her sprint down the hallway.

It was so silent until Kyle showed up and asked us out for lunch. Austin walked away without even saying goodbye.

"Sorry, I can't go. I have a project to finish for um school... FRENCH." If it wasn't obvious yet, Heather is a terrible liar. She didn't want to come because she thinks I have feelings for Kyle.

"Oh that's too bad, how bout you Jen?"

"I-" Heather cuts me off

"She's free," Heather smiled and left us alone.

I had no choice but go. We're only going to be alone for at least 30 minutes anyway so why not.

After lunch, we started walking back to school. I figured how quiet it was because I could hear the birds chirp and the wind's breeze. It was too awkward so we really needed a conversation. Before I could speak, he looks at me and starts talking.

"Hey can I ask you something?"

"Yeah sure"

"Am I a friend to you?" He raises both his eyebrows

"Yeah of course,"

"Wait let me rephrase that. Am I just a friend to you?"

"Why are you asking me this?" I was surprised with his question. What is he trying to say?

"Because I want to know what I mean to you,"

"I'm not sure what to say, where are you going with this?" We both stop walking. We look at each other eye to eye. Before he answered, he runs his hand through his soft blonde hair.

"I don't think of you as just a friend. I- I don't." I was having trouble breathing. "I like you Jen"

And just like that, he took my breath away
