Maria didn't sleep at all that night. She didn't sleep much anyway. One to two hours was usually enough for her, but this time was different. Her imagination was in overdrive with all of the things that could possibly go wrong with this exchange program. Well, there was also one main thing that kept bothering her, but she tried to tune out the voice in the back of her mind. Sleeping was difficult as it is with her obvious malnutrition, but Maria was proud and extremely thick headed. It didn't take much for the wind to be literally knocked out of her. Her mind and body didn't work properly enough to let her sleep since non human blood was a constant shock to her system no matter how long she had been an animatarian. The lack of sleep made her symptoms even worse. It was a vicious cycle that showed in her daily life. Not to mention the snarky remarks she received day after day, but it was too late to go back now. Her eyes were a dull red color while everyone else's were a sharp, blood red when they turned. Her skin was ghastly looking while everyone else's had a consistency that made them look very much alive. Her thickheadedness was going to get her in trouble one day and she knew it. She chose to ignore that too.

It was probably around 3 in the morning and Mckenzie was dead asleep. Though most everyone else was probably asleep by now also, there was a ton of movement outside. Maria assumed that the boys from Vasile's were moving in tonight so they would be ready for tomorrow. The Vampira's girls from that dorm were moved promptly after the assembly. Vampires preferred to do their heavy work at night. Sunlight gave vampires horrible headaches and even worse sunburns. If that's what happens to normal vampires, imagine how it would affect someone in Maria's position.

She flipped her covers off of herself and stood up. She stretched her arms and back. It had been six hours since the last time she had moved so it was understandable that she was a little stiff.

Maria started rummaging through her clothing, not worrying about the noise because Mckenzie could sleep through an apocalypse. She threw some black high waisted skinny jeans onto her bed along with a white crop top and her favorite black heeled boots. She untied her dark hair and let it fall past her shoulders. Maybe a late night walk would make her feel better.

Being at an all girls school her entire life, she had no idea how to even properly breathe near a boy of any species. She may be super popular now, but if boys are anything like they are in movies in real life, would she suddenly be kicked to the bottom of the food chain because she'll be bullied for being an animatarian? And with her luck, the one person on the planet she didn't want to be here would end up here anyway.

Within minutes she was walking through the tunnels to the main building where the students gathered for feeding every morning. Vampires could eat normal food, but it didn't satisfy quite as well as straight up human blood. Most vampires happened to be big fans of pancakes though.

The only way to get in or out of any building from the outside was to scan an identification card, that way whoever was on guard duty could see who was going in and out of every building and how long they were out based on when they came back inside. Vampires understood that sometimes a good run could help provoke sleep, and they trusted their students enough to return in a timely fashion.

Maria pulled out her ID card and scanned it on the front door panel. The doors clicked and she pushed them open. It had to have been weeks since she was last outside. The air smelt fresh and of early morning dew. Maria loved being outside at night, especially on nights like tonight when the stars shine brighter than usual.

She felt her body tingling. How she so desperately wanted to take off and run. The clear air could do that to her. It cleared her of all her worries and fears. She wanted to feel the wind through her hair and on her skin.

Maria slid her ID card back into her pocket and was running at full speed the next second. A laugh bubbled inside her chest as she let out her frustration by picking up the pace. She ran by the Science building and the Arts building. She ran past a few dorms. Maria expertly weaved her way through the boys who were moving their things into their new dorms. None seemed to take any particular interest in her except for one. Maria didn't notice. She kept on running to her destination. The boy who had seen her passed her. Maria didn't notice. Her lungs burned and she wanted to fall over and lay still for hours, but the burning only made her continue. She had her destination in mind and wouldn't stop until she made it.
