"I wish I could tan. Being pale is so boring. I'm pretty sure you can see through my skin sometimes I'm so pale," Mckenzie said. Maria rolled her eyes and held out her wrist to her best friend, showing her that parts of her skin were literally transparent, her veins glowing in the dim lighting. The two were sat in one of the two adjacent lofts looking over the main hall of the school with their legs dangling over the edge. Mckenzie had dragged Maria from her bed to go and creature-watch to see what kind of people would be attending the school. Maria had been in a horrible mood and kept asking how she had even gotten to her room the night before. Mckenzie figured she had just had a bad dream and proceeded to pick out an outfit for her to wear. School wasn't back in session yet so they didn't have to be in uniform.
So far, the new resident administrators from Vasile's had been chatting with the administrators from Vampira's. Multiple tables had been set up in the main hall to check in the different schools and give the students keys to their dorms. From what they could hear, which was only one side of the conversation since all Vampira's staff had their disturbers on, the other schools each had time slots throughout the day to come and check in. It was currently around 9:30 am and the next school was to arrive and start checking in around 10.
"I'm gonna go grab a drink. You want one?" Maria asked. Mckenzie nodded. Maria stood up on the edge of the loft and jumped two stories down onto the main hall floor below. The administrators didn't take notice. Kids dropping from every direction was a normal thing for them.
This loft was one of Mckenzie's favorite spots in the school. She liked to lay back and close her eyes. The air conditioning vent would be right above her and felt like a winter breeze on her undead skin. It was hard for her to get cold, being undead and all. There was a point where she had experienced that breeze first hand and didn't have to go and suck the blood of a human afterward, but those early memories were slowly starting to fade.
She imagined she was laying outside. She was on the hill on the South Campus. The snow was knee deep, but she was just saying in it. Her arms were out in either direction. Her eyes were closed but she could feel the snowflakes fall onto her face. It took them a minute to melt since her skin had adapted to be almost as cold as the snow to regulate her body temperature. She didn't have any snow clothing on. She didn't need it. She didn't get cold. Mckenzie opened her eyes and looked up at the sky. It was cloudy, but the clouds weren't thick enough to hide the sun completely. The snow around her was cold, but she could still feel the warmth of the sun against her skin. The light didn't give her a headache and her skin wasn't smoking. She heard playful screams coming from all around her. Confused, Mckenzie sat up. She ran her fingers through the snow as she took in the scene around her.
Treetops were covered with snow, but were still green underneath. Icicles hung from the roofs of school buildings. The ground was covered in untouched, perfect snow except for the area near her. There seemed to be six people around her, though none were paying attention to Mckenzie specifically. Her eyebrows furrowed as she realized she recognized some of them. They were her friends.
Jacque was running circles around the group, racing with a black dog and laughing. Lauren was standing next to a boy with wavy dirty blond hair. The boy had his left arm wrapped around her waist and was waving his right hand. A small tornado of snow was flying in front of the two. Lauren stared at it in awe and the boy was doing the same to Lauren while also concentrating on the tornado. Maria had her arms wrapped tightly around the waist of a tall blond boy. They were slowly moving away from the ground. Her toes were on his and she looked down at the ground in terror and amazement and the fact that she wasn't touching it. The boy held onto her just as tight, if not tighter, while they slowly ascended into the sky. They didn't get too high up though before the guy leaned down to her level and kissed her.
It was cute how they all had someone. Jacque had her werewolf, Lauren had her wizard, and Maria had her vampire. Mckenzie felt her heart ache. She wished she had someone too.
"Mckenzie?" Someone said. A boys hand was placed on her shoulder. Just as she turned her head to look at him she was startled awake.
"Damn I thought you were dead," Maria said. Mckenzie had a horrible headache. Her dream seemed so vivid. She couldn't get the faces and the images out of her head and she wondered who that boy was.
"Are you alright?" Maria asked her. Mckenzie shrugged.
"Just had a dream." Maria handed her her drink and a chocolate chip cookie. She looked out of breath.
"Just swiped them from the kitchen. Fresh out of the oven."
"Maria, it worries me that that little trip took your breath away," Mckenzie said. Maria gave her a warning look.
"I'm fine." Maria looked back down into the foyer. Mckenzie studied her face. Something was wrong, but she couldn't tell what.
"There you guys are. We've been looking for you everywhere," Lauren said. She and Jacque were standing in the loft across from Maria and Mckenzie. Lauren jumped down into the lobby then back up into Maria and Mckenzie's loft. Jacque did the same. Jacque pulled out a bowl of popcorn. The three girls looked over at her. She had a mouthful and shrugged.
"To watch the drama unfold." A piece of popcorn fell out of her mouth. Maria jumped down from the loft to pick it up before it hit the ground since the admins would freak out if they heard it hit the group, but someone beat her to it. A boy with wavy dirty blond hair held the piece of pop corn in his hand. Mckenzie almost fell out of the loft. She looked over at Lauren who was staring at the boy and then looked back at the boy who was staring at Maria. She hadn't even noticed him yet. She stood up and her breath seemed to catch in her throat. Mckenzie noticed how she took a tentative step backwards. It confused her. Did they know each other? The boy smirked at Maria. She looked like she was about to cry. He closed his hand and then opened it again and the piece of popcorn was gone. Maria's expression changed from mild fear to putrid anger and then she was gone. She must have just ran off. The boy looked up at the three girls sitting on the loft ledge and winked just as the doors to the school opened and people started to pile into the lobby. Mckenzie checked the time on the clock below. It was 10.
"Vampira's School for the Supernatural welcomes Merlin Academy," Lauren said with a defeated sigh before popping some popcorn into her mouth. Mckenzie was concerned about Maria, but she figured she ought to stay back for a while. There was a reason Maria ran off and Mckenzie wanted to know why. She wanted to know preferably before the drama unfolded. Little did she know that the drama had unfolded before she even had time to take another sip of her O- snack.
