he makes my heart hurt
------------------------------
A regular weekend went by and regular things happened. Jacque low key stalked Calum some more, Maria got bullied more often, Michael avoided Mckenzie, and Lauren just lived her life. Ashton spent time with Luke devising plans about how to make this year as easy as possible for both of them. Mckenzie had filled Michael, Lauren, and Jacque in on what she found out about Maria and Ashton in as little detail as possible.
Something changed in Maria recently but Mckenzie couldn't put her finger on just what it was. She tried to comfort her best friend, but she could tell that it wasn't doing any good.
"Isn't it sad that we have a class called defense in combat because our society is so fucked up right now?" Maria asked, eating another spoonful of eggs. Mckenzie nodded, swallowing her bite of toast.
"They have to instruct children on how to fight like they think that the occasion will arise when they need to," Mckenzie added.
"How long until first period?" Calum asked from across the table.
"Ten minutes," Jacque added. It was starting to get easier for her to reply to simple things that he said. Calum nodded and went back to his severely undercooked bacon.
"I'm kind of nervous," Michael said. Lauren nodded in agreement.
"Most of these courses are new for us all and we have to get used to so many different people at once," Lauren said.
"Damn I wish I had some bacon, but I'm too lazy to get up and get some," Mckenzie said, pouting. Michael snapped his fingers without a thought and soon there was a plate full of bacon in front of her. Mckenzie smiled to herself as she ate some. She knew Michael still cared which is why she would casually wish for little things every so often. She missed his attention.
"It's so early. I wanna go back to bed," Maria said. The table groaned in agreement.
"How long now?" Calum asked.
"Three minutes," Jacque answered immediately. Lauren opened her mouth to comment, but Jacque sent a red-eyed glare her way and suppressed Lauren to a smug smirk.
"I'm gonna get going," Maria said, standing from the table. "If I don't see all of you sooner, we have rock band last period together."
"What do you have first?" Calum asked. Maria looked down at her schedule.
"Bio."
"Okay I'll go with you then," Calum said. They waved goodbye to their friends and started the walk to the science building.
"I wish I could walk outside during the day to classes," Calum said.
"Yeah same, but only if I want to kill myself," Maria said. Calum chuckled. When they got to the bio room, everyone who was in this class was standing on one side of the room.
"Shit," Maria mumbled under her breath. Calum looked in the direction she was looking and saw Luke and Ashton talking with two of the girls who usually say at their table. Ashton and Luke's backs were facing Maria and Calum, but one of the girls noticed them and pointed them out to Ashton who turned around and smirked. He waltzed over to the pair, closely followed by Luke, and put his arm across Calum's shoulders but looked at Maria.
"Aren't you a junior?" Ashton asked. Maria rolled her eyes because she knew that he already knew the answer to that question.
"Yeah. Yeah I am," Maria replied. Her eyes were a dull red, not on purpose though. Even if she had tried they still wouldn't be much brighter.
