Chapter 1
Alina
“Well, honey?” Mom asked. “You think you’re going to be okay for today?”
I smile and shrug. Mom really believes that I can’t speak. Dad does too, and so does River. The day after the accident, when I had been put in the hospital, I was way too out of it to utter a single word. When mom grew worried and questioned my doctor, he told her that I might have lost my voice temporarily or for good.
When I heard that, I decided to just not talk at all. It was easier. It was a way for me to be excused from having to answer everyone. When people fired question after question to me, I had the excuse of not being able to speak. I didn’t have to face the truth.
When it came down to going back to school, I lasted a week before River cracked and punch between thirty to fifty guys for the nasty things they said to me. I guess when it came down to it, people would rather I have died than Blake.
The day before we left, I went to see Blake’s parents. I wrote them a note before I went, and both parents cried, hard. I was surprised when Blake’s mom wrapped me up in a tight hug.
“I’m sorry,” she had cried, in a way that made my heart clench. “I’m sorry for what’s happening to you at school. I’m sorry you lost your best friend. I’m sorry you lost your voice.” She kept going on and on, but I felt the guilt eating me up from inside.
The day after that, we left. We moved into a whole new state. Mom let River and I stay home for the first week, but now that it’s Monday, we both knew we had no other choice but to go.
She woke up extra early today to make us breakfast, and she gave me a wad of cash. She even handed me a new phone. “River,” she sternly said. “Take care of your sister. Make sure nobody bothers her.”
Inwardly, I can’t help but sigh. River is my twin, younger than me by eight minutes. I don’t need his help. I would be fine.
Why? Because this time, I’m not going to become best friends with the school’s most popular boy and then get him killed.
I grab a pen and paper quickly and write something down before sliding it over to mom and River.
I’m pretty sure I’LL have to make sure that nobody bothers HIM. River Raft. He’ll never live it down!
