Chapter 34

Aiden

“T. Minus. Six. Days,” Alina says.

She’s been doing this every single day for the past fifteen days. Our parents just think that she’s counting down to prom.

          We know otherwise.

“Please stop doing that,” I beg her.

She sighs, looking at a loss of any emotion on her face.

Jason has been getting antsy with every day that we get closer. We’re fairly certain that Jared knows that we know he’s planning for prom. We’ve even discussed maybe skipping prom, just to avoid Jared. But that was no go when Sorita pointed out that, whether we skip prom to avoid Jared or not, he’s still going to find another day to kill Alina, and that next time, we may not be fortunate enough to know when it will be.

Then, Jason added the fact that if he arrives at prom, looking for Alina, and doesn’t find her, he’ll just go ahead and murder everyone else there in his anger. That would be three hundred some lives in our hands.

On top of all of that, Sorita’s been getting more and more agitated with Jeremy, and Jeremy’s starting to become more and more of an asshole to my sister.

It really makes me want to just punch him.

The whole group of us is at the local park, where we can be away from our parents, who could, at any given moment, listen in.

Alina’s lying down over my outstretched legs, pulling apart pieces of grass, staring up at the sky. She’s been really distant lately.

“Does anybody know where the heck Jeremy is?” Sorita asks, without looking up from her phone. She huffs, typing rapidly. Two seconds later, her phone rings. “Simmons…Yeah…No, it’s all under control. Max, Jason, and Nick are here.”

Jeremy suddenly walks towards us, from who knows where. Her eyes narrow. “Nice of you to finally show, Jer,” she whispers, covering the bottom of her phone. Then she lets go. “Ripper?...I mean, I wouldn’t see why not….You’re right, though, we might want to send out Jerry to the prom too; he’s big enough to take on Ripper.” Sorita stares at Jeremy’s pocket. She quickly says, “Yeah, I have to call to you back.” There’s a pause. “Give me an hour.”

“Passport?” she questions Jeremy, pointing at his pocket.

He looks down at his pocket, and stuffs the passport in. “Yeah, I had to go and get it renewed. That’s why I’m late.”

          Sorita narrows her eyes. “Why?”

Jeremy shrugs. “Parents are planning a family vacation soon.”

Sorita stares at him for a few seconds longer. She’s not buying it, I know that, but Jeremy wouldn’t lie. It’s no big deal, really.

“Alright, so what’s the plan for Saturday?” Jeremy asks.

“River, Aiden, and I went through that secret passageway yesterday, before the SAT’s,” Tyler pipes up. “We discovered that there’re two routes. In the dark, you can’t tell. We can use that route to our advantage. If we can just lure Jared in there, then we can corner him.”
