Chapter 11
Alina
“Such an idiot-I can’t believe-how could you have jeopardized…?-You’re such a little d-”
By this point, I end up slapping my hand to his mouth before Aiden begins to cuss in juvy, around a bunch of cops.
I mean, one cop in particular looks like he really doesn’t like Aiden. Maybe he doesn’t like any of us. Maybe he hates children. Who knows? All I know is: Aiden needs to shut his gob before he lands us all into more trouble.
“My dad is going to kill me!” Aiden shouts in frustration. Jeremy sighs behind the bars, not even daring to look up at Aiden.
“I’m sorry, I really am,” he mumbles. “We didn’t get to the car in time.”
“And whose fault was that?” Aiden mockingly asks, as if he just knows that it’s all Jeremy’s fault and only Jeremy’s fault.
“Mine, actually,” Sorita pipes up, but even she looks ten times more deflated than her usual bubbly, cheery self. “I tripped over a chair, when we were all running around, trying to leave because of the POPO. In the process, I twisted my ankle,” She scowls. “Hurt like a bi-” she cuts herself off, seeing the death glare that the same cop from before sent her. “-ig…meteor. Hurt like a BIG meteor colliding with the earth,” she slowly says.
Aiden breathes out heavily, running a hand through his hair, pacing back and forth. “We can’t let mom and dad find out about this. They would castrate us,” he whispers, low enough that we could hear him, but the cops-standing a few feet away-couldn’t.
We all stand and stare blankly at each other for a minute or two, not really knowing how to handle this situation. Finally, after an eye-staring match between Sorita and Aiden, Sorita groans, throws her head back, and tells him, “Fine. Do it. Call Em.”
My eyes widen. Is it a good idea to call her? Will she tattle on us? If she does, what will be the consequences? Mom and dad wouldn’t be too harsh on us…would they? I sit myself to the side with River-who is completely silent, for the first time in…well…years, really-while Aiden goes outside to call Em. The second that Aiden is gone, Jeremy starts banging his head against the cell bars, muttering to himself.
Sorita has herself sat in a corner with Madison, who are playing some kind of game with their hands, where they’re slapping each other’s hands a certain way with a certain number of repetitions as they go along.
Tyler is sort of just watching them do their little hand slapping game, trying to figure out the way it works-even I don’t understand it, but apparently Sorita and Madison do.
“I kind of fucked up today, didn’t I?” I hear Jeremy suddenly muse to me.
“You think?” Sorita hisses, disrupting her clapping game with Madison.
“I didn’t ask you!” Jeremy snaps, turning his head to the side slightly, before glancing back at me.
“Douchebag,” Madison mutters.
“Shut up!” Jeremy practically screams, allowing me the opportunity to place a comforting hand around his clenched up hand, which is grasping the bar.
I really, really am regretting my choice of faking my speech right now. It’s-my helplessness of not being able to speak, that is-not really helping the situation.
Aiden suddenly runs back inside, and stands tall by my side. “Em’s coming. She said she wouldn’t ‘hold any opinions until she got here and gets the whole story,’ whatever that means,” he states, using air-quotes when necessary. He then huffs in and out, staring silently between all of us. “Did I miss some big fight, or something?”
