Chapter 5

Alina

“Hey Alina!”

“Alina, nice shirt!”

“Oh my gosh, Alina, your shoes are so perf.”

“Looking good, Alina!”

It wasn’t just unusual. It was downright weird. The people here treated me like I was one of the most popular people here.

Although, I suppose, seeing as Aiden is mister popular, my hanging out with him-correction: my living with him-would automatically make me a popular person.

I don’t know how Aiden put up with it.

I mean, he has to hide lots of thing for the sake of it. His burns, as he told me yesterday, were from cooking.

Yes, you heard me. He’s got a hobby of cooking, and he left the stove on, while holding a hot pot, in the school’s kitchens, where he secretly stayed afterschool sometimes with the lunch ladies, and his arm got burnt when it got in contact with the open flame, causing him to drop the pot, which burnt his legs and bruised him a bit, which explained the limping.

Apparently, nobody (literally nobody) besides for me knew about this hobby for cooking that he’s got. He said that he would appreciate me keeping this on the DL, which I was happy to oblige to.

“Did you hear the news?” Sorita asks in first period. At my shake, implying that I had not heard the news, she begins bopping up and down in her seat. “So basically, my half-sister is getting married-she was my mom’s child before she married dad and had Aiden and me-but you and your family is invited! Aiden and I have told her a handful about you guys and she wanted to meet you, just you, not your brother. Anyways, since the guy she’s getting married to, is the older brother of Aiden’s friend, Tyler, Aiden and Tyler are going to be groomsmen. Isn’t that wonderful? I’m going to be a bridesmaid!”

It took a bit for me to process this. Then I pointed at myself, to confirm that I was the one who her sister wanted to meet.

“She’s coming home today, we’ll introduce you then!”

I smiled widely and nodded. I had never been to a wedding before in my life. This was going to be a wonderful opportunity, but the part I had trouble wrapping my head around was that Tyler Wimbly was going to be (basically) related to Sorita and Aiden.

After this, my entire day was filled with people coming up and asking if I had ‘heard the news’. Assuming that it was all just about the impeding wedding, I would smile and nod.

And then they would give me weird looks and walk away, like I had done something wrong.

“Have you heard the news?” River cries at lunch, breathlessly.

Again, I smile widely and nod.

River stares at me like I’m insane. “ARE YOU DAFT, WOMAN?” he shouts, grasping my shoulders. “How can you be smiling when Aiden, Nutterwall and Mitchell are in the nurse’s office?”

My eyes widened.

He sighs. “I’m guessing you didn’t know that?” I shake my head violently. “Basically, Aiden was pissed this morning when Nutterwall was mentioning to Mitchell about the sleepover and he went nuts. A fight broke out and somewhere in the midst of it all, you supposedly became Aiden’s girlfriend.”
