Leaf

I am like a leaf,
Tossed violently in the wind,
My veins have the air of change
flowing through them,
Yet this place is not where I come from
nor the where I seek.
I came from a tree with roots that run deep,
Branches that hold the weight of other worlds
and the secret they keep.
I am one leaf among a host of many like me
who are taken from their home
whether by storm or breeze, or curiosity
of what lies beyond the boughs
of my forest deep.
And so I let go, with hopes high,
and a mind full of dreams
and found that the world is not all that it seems.
There is loveliness and beauty
that can be dangerous to me,
there are things that seem torturous
that are better than the nice things.
There are things I thought I knew,
And things I thought I could do,
things I thought would make me sturdier,
But I never would have touched them,
If I only had known earlier.
When I left my haven of green
for the world so wide and unseen,
I thought I was invisible.
But the world has left me cynical
with this one truth.
I am just a leaf, small and fragile,
in a strong and wild wind,
No place to call home,
and no start to begin.
