The words were out.
And just like that the bullet was fired. He watched in morbid fascination as the hurtled towards her.
She was frozen. Time had frozen. She watched in horror as those words came closer. She had one thought. But she didn't know what it was yet. In her mind it was happening so fast, and in his mind he watched in slow motion. But try as he might to catch up with the words and push them from their path to her chest, he could not catch up. Perhaps the bullet was traveling far faster than it looked.
He could not take them back.
It hit her hard. Right where he was aiming for. It hit her heart. But then something happened that he had not intended. The bullet tore through her breaking heart and headed for her spine. You could tell the moment it hit because she seemed to concave. The strings that held her back straight and her shoulders upright, snapped and her frame fell forward. But somehow she found the strength to straighten up just for him. As if daring him to break her again.
Though her spine was shattered and her heart shredded, her eyes were unbroken.
They did not waver like her words did. They spoke boldly and unafraid. Her eyes, in that moment, were fearless.
