One afternoon, I was reclining in a chair looking out the window, basking in the sunlight coming from outside, a book in my lap. Everything was so perfectly still and peaceful—a strange event for the manor—but it didn't last very long at all.

A high-pitched scream came from just down the hall. The book fell onto the floor as I leapt up and ran to find Mey-Rin. She happened to be in the laundry room next to me, backed up against the wall and staring at the half-made bed, horrified.

"What's going on?" I asked.

She only stuttered and pointed to the laundry basket, where there was a lump moving under a pile of sheets. "T—th—there's something under there!"

"A good thing or a bad thing?" I said nervously, backing away with wide eyes.

"Whatever it is, we have to see!" She began stepping towards it, shaking. "It could be a venomous snake for all I know! Or a deranged rat!"

"Don't say that!" I grabbed her hands and made her face me. "Look, we'll both take a corner and lift on three! That way if one of us gets attacked, the other goes for help!"

"But what if it's a whole band of spid—"

"Mey-Rin!" I nearly screamed. "Look, just..." I took a hold of an edge. She did the same. "Okay, one... two... three!"
