I was awoken by loud, booming thunder. I sat up in the bed and rubbed my eyes until my vision adjusted to the dark. I assumed the thunder was close—meaning the storm was still heavy—but when I looked outside at the sky, it was perfectly clear.
It's then that it hit me. That was a gunshot.
