I gasped and took the other kitten in my shaking arms, running back down the stairs weakly to Sebastian room, where he placed the kitten on the floor, kneeling next to it. The poor thing still looked terrified. I set mine down and approached him with my head hung.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
He stood and looked at me, confused. "Whatever for?"
"I—" I sniffed. "I saw it out on the ledge. I wanted to get it, but I was too afraid, and it fell." I began sobbing out of shame. "I didn't... even try... I'm so sorry."
He embraced my shaking body, laying his head on top of mine. "It's alright, my dear, I wouldn't want you risking your own life for something like this."
"But I wouldn't have been. I could have made it. I could have. I was too afraid..." I continued crying.
"Estella, I forgive you. But, please promise me you'll remember one thing..." He pulled away and placed a finger under my chin, making me meet his eyes. "You don't have to be afraid with me." He leaned in and kissed me softly. "Now, it's all over. I suppose we should both get back to what we were doing?"
"Yes, of course," I feebly nodded, watching him exit. Even though he had forgiven me whole heartedly, I felt that nothing could extinguish the burning guilt I still felt in my chest.
