Josh's P.O.V
I'm sat nervously on the couch looking down at my hands, bouncing my knee up and down out of anxiety. Cas had been in the bathroom for a while. I told myself if she wasn't out in the next twenty minutes I would check on her.
I felt a body collapse in the spot next to me.
"Hey."
I look over to see who it is, it's Chris. He looked tired, I was curious why he was still awake, it's one in the morning.
"Hey." I smiled reassuringly.
"You want to play chess or something, I'm bored and well Tyler passed out.." He said pointing at the chair across from us. Tyler was sprawled out snoring. I laughed, seeing the drool pooling on his shirt.
"Yeah sure, I'm pretty bored too."
Chris smiled shyly, "Thanks."
He had the same type of smile as his sister. Shy, crooked. It was funny how much they acted alike.Chris got the chess pieces while I dragged the small coffee table over to the couch. I sat on the floor while Chris sat across from me on the couch.
He was a sweet kid, had a good sense of humor."Hey! That's cheating!" Chris said in between laughs.
"No! That's the place you put the horse." I protested.
"Okay first of all, it's not a "horse" it's called a knight, genius, secondly how many times have you even played chess like twice?"
"Pfft what, I'm a pro what're you even saying," I said sarcastically.
"I'm kidding. I haven't played in a while, wanna teach me?"
It's true, I really haven't played in a while. The last time I played was with my mom, when she was still here."Mooom this is so hard, why are you making me do this?"
"Because your father won't play with me and your siblings would try to eat the chess pieces, plus it's a good game to learn how to play. Now this one is called the bishop. You can only move it in a diagonal direction."
I looked at her puzzled. "What's a diagon direction?"
My mother chuckled, her laugh sounded like the soft sweet sound of bells you hear around town during Christmas time. Not the big loud blaring ones that go off at midnight, but the small quiet ones. And her smile, her smile was beautiful. She was beautiful.
"Diagonal. Diagonal is something that doesn't go straight up or straight sideways, it's in the middle. It's different, unique, just like you." She said sweetly kissing my tiny nose."Josh? You okay?"
I snapped back to reality.
"W-what? Yeah yeah I'm fine."
Chris gave me a confused look, Cocking his head sideways.
"Okay. Well anyways you have to get me in check, the king and-" a creak came from the direction of the bathroom door, Chris's head snapped up.Cas hopped into the room using the wall for support, with a very exited Chris bumping into her.
"Oof! Chris you almost knocked me over!"
Chris looked straight into his sisters eyes.
"I-I'm just glad your okay. I was worried I'm sorry."
Cassidy's lips formed into a soft smile as she pulled her brother back into a hug.
"I love you." Chris said softly choking up.
"I love you too." Comforting her brother, resting her head on his shoulder.
They hugged for about a couple minutes, hearing occasional sobs from Chris.Cassidy slowly pulled away, "Hey bud, you wanna move over to the couch? My knees killing me."
Chris nodded in response helping Cassidy over to the couch I was seated on.
Both collapsing onto the couch, Chris curled up in Cas's arms, occasionally hearing small sniffles escape from him.
"Hey there." Cas spoke to me quietly trying not to disturb Chris.
"Hey. How are you feeling?"
"Better. It feels nice to be cleaned up and not as stinky and gross. How about you?"
"I'm alright, your brother was just teaching me a review on how to play chess." I chuckled. My eyes flickered to her face, I noticed she had a busted lip and multiple scratches all over. Immediately I put my thoughts to action.
"Hey have you cleaned those yet?" Pointing out the scrapes on her face
"What? Oh no I haven't. I mean I just took a bath though so they should be fine."
I stared a little more at the cuts, they didn't look like they were doing too good, they were getting crusty from the drying blood, having kind of a blackish color in some and a yellowish kind in the others. That wasn't a good sign, infected injuries were not super great to deal with.
