We walked into the room after the girls gave us the okay to see him. We saw him on the bed, watching cartoons on a small tv. He looked over at us and waved.

I smiled and rushed to him, hugging him, but not too tightly. He nuzzled into my neck as I started crying, "I was so worried.. Never swallow a Lego again Karkat!"

Karkat nodded and I let go, giving Dave a turn to hug him.
Gamzee and Tavros stood back. Tavros had his head down and his tail tucked. Gamzee told him it was okay.
Karkat looked over at them and Gamzee let Tavros go to sit on the bed with Karkat. They started coloring on some paper with crayons that Aradia left for him.

Dave motioned us outside while the boys were busy. I looked to him, "What do we do?"

"What do you mean? We only have one option!" Dave harshly whispered.

"I meant after the surgery... If he does survive, how do we speak to him? Feferi said he'll have a difficult time speaking. How will we be able to understand him? I can probably learn sign language, but I doubt Karkat could learn it. He hardly knows the alphabet and some numbers.. A-And if he... If he dies... H-How the hell are we supposed to move on?!"

"Whoa.." Gamzee put his hand on my shoulder, "Y'all need to relax.. I'm sure Karkat will be alright.. He's a tough little troll alright. He's gotta be.."

"Gamzee's right." Dave sighed, "Karkat's a tough little dude. He's one of the remaining ones of his blood color.. They don't usually survive birth, but look at Karkat.. He has gone so far, and he has gone through so much.. He can survive this.."

"B-But.."

"Stop doubting him, John. I promise he'll be alright." Dave smiled.
"You don't know that." I sighed, "I'm just... I've grown so attached to him over the summer, and I had so many plans. I wanted to take him places." I started crying more, "I-I wanted to take him everywhere. I already know he has a short life as it is. He doesn't live as long as Feferi's troll Eridan.. Karkat can only live up to a year or two.." I sobbed, "I-I c-could've taken him to Disneyland... T-Take him t-to work with me for a day.."

Dave hugged me tightly. "And you will. Karkats going to live his life. A stupid god damn Lego isn't going to take him down. He's been alone, starving, living in an unsafe environment, seen things he shouldn't have, been abandoned, been found by you... Karkat has had nothing but shit his whole life until you came along. I should've been there for him like you. I should've kept looking for him that day I left him all alone! His life isn't over, John! It's just beginning!" And now Dave was crying. He took off his shades and wiped his eyes, "Karkat's gonna live.."

"I.." I sighed, "I'm going to just.. Can I spend some time with him alone before they put him under the knife?" I sniffled, "Anything can happen, and I don't want to regret not spending time with him.."

They nodded and Gamzee went in to get Tavros. After they came out, I went in and closed the door. I walked to the bed and sat down.

"H-Hey Karkat.." I smiled.
He waved happily at me, and pointed at my face.

"What?" I tilted my head.

He rolled his eyes and drew on paper. It was a drawing of me with tears, and a question mark to the side.

"Why was I crying?"

He nodded. I didn't want to tell him, but I didn't want to lie either.
"Well, I'm just happy you're okay right now, but in scared of what will happen when they take out the lego."

He wrote on the paper, 'WUTS GUNNA HAPEEN?'

"Um.. I-I'm not sure, but something like that always scares me.. Are you scared?"

He shook his head no.

"Really? Not scared?" I pet his head, "You're a dork."

He grinned and stuck his tongue out. He wrote on the paper again, 'I NOT SCARED UF NUTHING.' He acted touch, which made me laugh.

"I know. You're a lot stronger than I am." I smiled and kissed his forehead, "Well, they're gonna do it in a little bit so we don't have much time to talk.. Is there anything you wanna tell me?"

He nodded and wrote, 'HOW DO YOU SPELL DVS AND UR NAME?'

I smiled and took the crayon from him, writing 'John' and 'Dave'.

He smiled and grabbed two papers, turning away from me. He started scribbling on them.
Feferi and Aradia came into the room, "John? It's time... We need you to leave the room, but we'll let you know if you can see him or not afterwards."

Karkat moved and hugged me tightly. I smiled and hugged him back, kissing his forehead. I let him go, nodded and stood. "Alright. I'll see you later Karkat." I walked out of the room.

They shut the door, but Feferi came back out, "Karkat told me to give you this." She handed me a folded paper.
She went back in and shut the door. I smiled to myself, walking back to the waiting room. I saw that only Dave was there.

"Where's Gamzee and Tavros?" I questioned.

"Gamzee said it was getting late, so he went home. Tavros was pretty much asleep on his lap. I said we'd call later to tell them what happens with Karkat."

"Oh." I nodded and sat beside him. We sat in a long silence for a while. He noticed the folded paper in my hand.

He pointed, "What's that?"

"Oh, Karkat just drew something for us. I actually haven't looked at it yet. Wanna look first?" I smiled, handing it to him.

He grinned and took the paper, unfolding it. I watched and waited for him to laugh at how Karkat drew, but he didn't. Instead, he began to shake and he dropped the paper, running down the hall.

"W-Whoa! Dave!!" I stood up. I looked down and picked up the picture, looking at it.

I almost burst into tears. I dropped the picture and ran down the hall, "KARKAT!!!!!!"

I dropped the picture and ran down the hall, "KARKAT!!!!!!"
