Zoe had been planning this for precisely 3 days and 12 hours now. She couldn't sleep at night, for she'd be playing it over and over in her head, wondering what he would say, wondering how he'd take it, wondering if she was doing the right thing.
Today, seeing as Alfie had been at his office all morning and the last parcel she'd ordered had arrived at 9am, just seemed like the perfect time to do it.
As the clock struck 1pm Zoe pegged up the last of her five clues and double checked each hiding place. Alfie was due home any minute, he'd just called her from his cab.
Wearing a pair of mom jeans and a cute summery top, Zoe fiddled with her hair and pulled it back into a messy bun, an just as she finished she heard a car pull up outside the house.
Zoe rushed to the front door and opened it before Alfie could even finish getting out of his taxi. He smiled at her oddly before he thanked the driver as handed him his money.
"Hey" Alfie walked up to Zoe and grabbed her into a bear hug, kissing her neck lovingly.
"Hi" Zoe squeaked from in Alfie's chest, slightly suffocated by his tight grip.
"How comes you were so eager to open the door for me?" Alfie asked, releasing Zoe and pushing his shoes off once e got inside. "I have my key with me you know?"
"I know" Zoe smiled shyly, "but I have a surprise for you."
"A surprise?" Alfie crinkled his nose. "But its not my birthday? Or Christmas? And our anniversary isn't for another three months?" Alfie recalled, making Zoe smile.
"I know, just trust me" Zoe said, taking Alfie'a hand and leading him to the garden. "This is where it starts. There are five clues all over the house. Each one will lead you to the next, ad if you haven't already guessed by the time you reach the last clue then that will reveal all. The first clue is just over there in the shed."
Alfie grinned at Zoe, laughing. "You're a nutter."
He walked over to the shed and warily peeped inside. In amongst all of his 'stupid kids toys he bought for stupid reasons' as Zoe likes to call them, Alfie found a small yellow envelope.
"Open it." Zoe encouraged him, watching from just outside the shed as he reached for the envelope and opened it up, taking out the little card and looking at her for further instruction.
"Read it out" she smiled.
"Hopefully these toys now won't go to waste,
Now they will put a smile on your face.
That is of course until we hit the teens,
Now go to the summer lounge to see what I mean."Alfie smiled at Zoe, obviously confused, and then walked into the summer living room, Zoe following behind him, and began hunting for the next clue.
On the fireplace ledge, Alfie found the next envelope, a blue one this time.
"TV, couches and candy,
This room could come in handy,
But that's thinking too far ahead,
Go check under our bed.""What is this all about?" Alfie asked Zoe, chuckling as he made his way upstairs to their bedroom, Zoe following him, laughing slightly too.
"You'll see when you figure it all out!" she promised.
"There's nothing here!" Alfie said, his body practically upside down as he tried to bend his top half over enough to see under the bed.
"There is, I swear! Just look further into the middle"
Alfie got down on his hands and knees, and in the end laid on his stomach and reached right under the bed, finally reaching and grabbing a white envelope.
Standing up again he read
"It happened here as if by magic,
You know what I mean so I'll leave out the graphics,
You're getting closer, I wonder if you've guessed,
Now go to the room where we save for our guests.""I have no clue." He shook his head, making Zoe laugh as they headed to their guest bedroom.
On the bed in there he found a pink envelope pegged to the board Zoe ha insisted upon him installing so she could write notes to guests.
This one said
"So this is your final written clue,
After this it's all up to you,
With a lick of paint this room would be perfect,
There's a big clue in the kitchen that will help you work it.""What the heck?" Alfie laughed, adding the card to his clues in his hand and beginning the walk down to the kitchen.
Zoe felt the butterflies begin to flutter in her stomach a she followed him. This was it. He was about to find out. She was glad he hasn't worked it out yet, it made it more exciting, and more fun, but it also made it more nerve wracking.
"Where?" Alfie questioned, shuffling round the kitchen looking for some sort of clue.
Zoe sniffed the air blatantly, waiting until she was sure Alfie had seen her before saying "Can you smell that?"
Alfie frowned a little and sniffed too "It smells like something is baking." He frowned, opening the door of the oven.
"There's something in here." he said, grabbing a tea towel and pulling the tray out, placing it on the side.
"Why is there a bun in the oven?" he asked Zoe. "Where you baking?"
Zoe shook her head and smiled gently, walking up to Alfie and standing beside him. "Look at it more closely. Think about it."
Alfie looked back at the bun and saw the top of a white stick peeking out of the top. He looked at Zoe cautiously and then slowly pulled the stick out, turning it to face him.
It took him a few seconds. He looked from the stick to the bun to Zoe, and then back to the stick.
"This is a positive pregnancy test." Alfie spoke aloud, his eyes still glued to the stick.
"There is a bun in the oven." He seemed to be nodding to himself.
Suddenly he turned to Zoe, wide eyed and a beaming face. "You're pregnant?!" he exclaimed.
Zoe couldn't help but grin back at him, happily allowing him to lift her in his arms and spin her around.
"You're pregnant?!" Alfie asked again as he put Zoe down on her feet again, dropping his eyes and his hands to her still flat stomach.
"Yes" Zoe grinned, "I'm pregnant!"
"Oh my God!" Alfie laughed excitedly, kissing Zoe right on the lips and then pulling up her top and leaving gentle kisses all over her stomach.
Zoe laughed happily at his excitement, a wave of relief washing over her.
"I'm going to be a daddy! You're going to be a mummy! This is so amazing! Zo, we made a little human!" He grinned, his excitement and happiness warming Zoe's heart.
She grabbed his face and hissed him passionately "I love you Alfie Deyes. I'm so glad you're so happy, I'm so excited to be starting our own little family together" she smiled.
Alfie kissed her back. "I love you too... Mummy" he grinned.
