"What am I then?"He stepped in front of me, first looking on the ground and then directing his gaze to me, "We're friends, really good friends, right?"
"Right" I smiled.
"Then let's start cooking for your really good friend who is starving."
"You want to help me?"
"You don't think I'll let you do all the work alone when you're in that state, do you?" he asked as he pointed at my plastered leg.
"Well then" I nodded, "That's a good oppurtunity to check your cooking skills."
"Alright, Miss 491" he suddenly placed his arms around me and lifted me up to sit on the kitchen counter, "What do I do first?"
"First you take some potatoes and give them to me together with a peeler and a bowl. I'll peel the potatoes while you do some other stuff."
"Aye aye ma'am" he did as I told him and handed me everything I asked for.
I took a potato out of the bowl and started peeling it, still sitting on the counter, "Now you take a few carrots and leeks out of the refrigerator and start cutting them. Don't forget to wash them first."
"Was your mother very concerned when she saw you?" he asked out of nowhere while washing the vegetables.
"She definietly was. The first thing she asked was if it was my father" I was so focused on peeling the potatoes that I spoke without thinking first.
"Your father?"
"Everyone in our neighborhood already knows, so why not tell you?" I sighed, "It's kinda awkward talking about this kind of stuff" I laughed facetious.
"Simply put, my father was in prison for beating me when I was a child. I couldn't tell my mother because I was too scared of him. One evening it was so severe that some neighbors heard him shouting and called the police but I was already unconscious when they arrived."
Taehyung stepped in front of me, holding the cutting board he just took out of a cupboard and folded his arms while looking at me concerned, "Is that the reason you asked Joohyuk to show you how to fight?"
After peeling the last potato and setting it aside I directed my gaze at Taehyung who was still standing in front of me, "He was released a few months ago and was spotted in town. Sitting around doing nothing doesn't suit me."
"Jihye" he placed the cutting board on the counter, "As long as I am by your side, you won't ever have to be afraid" he put his hand on top of mine, cracking me a smile, "Not that you need it but I'll protect you."
"I appreciate that. Thank you."
Without any of the both of us noticing, we were looking in each other's eyes for a while.
One moment later I heard the sound of the front door snapping shut as well as the footsteps of someone coming in our direction.
"Taehyungieeeee!" a girl with straight and long black hair and light brown eyes entered the room squealing.
Both, Taehyung and I looked at her in surprise.
The girl's smile faded as she saw Taehyung's hand on mine, "Who's that, Taehyung?"
I looked at him in wonderment, not knowing what was going on.
"Yah" she approached us and immediately clasped his hand away from mine, "Let go of my boyfriend's hand."
"Wh-who?" I asked startled.
Without paying any more attention to me, she turned to Taehyung and intertwined her fingers with his, "I didn't see you since you moved. I've missed you."
Feeling like a third wheel as well as an idiot, I climbed down the kitchen counter and made a grab for my crutches.
"What are you doing?" Taehyung freed his hand from the girl and looked at me.
"I should go now" I managed to say as I walked to the door.
"Who's that girl anyway? Your new house maid? Judging from how she held on to your hand, she seems to like you. Tell her not to cross the line or I will, Taehyung."
Facing and holding on to the kitchen door, I spoke as calmly as possible, "You're the one crossing lines. You should learn not to judge people before you accuse them of anything."
I left the kitchen afterwards and walked to the front door.
After putting on my shoes I slightly opened the door when suddenly Taehyung appeared and slammed the door shut in front of me.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Why are you going?" he asked, looking sternly in my eyes.
"My mother told me to be home before it gets dark."
He smirked facetious, "C'mon Jihye. Both of us know that's not the reason."
"Why do you ask if you know the reason?" I slightly raised my voice, "Do you know what's the worst part? She's right. I crossed lines. I just wish you respected and trusted me as much as I respected you. Maybe then you had told me about your girlfriend and maybe then you had told me to stop thinking about you and approaching you. And maybe then I wouldn't look so pathetic right now."
"The only thing that makes you look pathetic right now is the fact that you just told someone not to judge people and not to accuse them of things they didn't do yet you're standing here giving me a harangue about trust and respect" he spoke as loud and stern as I did.
"What do you expect me to do?" I shouted, "Do you expect me to stand there, watching a girl who claims to be your girlfriend throwing herself at you? I just admitted to think of you as more than just a friend and the only thing you do is calling me pathetic."
"Did you hear me saying I didn't have feelings? I do. A lot in fact. I just want to clear things up first. I don't want you to misunderstand anything."
"Is there even something to misunderstand when that girl declared you as her boyfriend and you didn't even flinch?"
"Is there a reason he should? What's the use of hiding the truth?" the girl from before appeared next to Taehyung and folded her arms.
Gulping back the tears that were about to come, I opened the door and stormed out- as fast as I could with my broken leg.
"Jihye!" Taehyung called after me but I didn't stop.
One moment later a pair of arms embraced me from the back, "I told you I would test you when you don't expect it. But this time don't free yourself. Don't go."
