Allison POV

"Hey, Ally!" Lilly shouted over the music, "Mind if I go find my friend?"

"Actually, I'd prefer it if-"

"Great thanks you're the best!" Lilly interrupted me and ran off before I got to say that she better not leave me alone. I swore under my breath and pulled out my phone to see how long I had been there. Two minutes. "13 more to go," I thought. After about 5 minutes of waiting for Lilly to come back and get me, it began to sink in that the rest of these 15 minutes would be braved alone. I walked over towards the kitchen to fulfill my quest of three hellos and one slice of pizza. I dodge quite a few people in the 7 steps it took to reach the island in the middle that was stacked with pizza boxes.

"Hey," said a well-built guy by the pizza. "One greeting done," I thought to myself.

"Hey, I just wanted a piece of cheese please." I could feel my body tense up as he placed himself between me and the pizza. He continued to look me up and down as he smirked slyly. I tried to back a way but my escape route had been closed off by two girls leaning against the counter and making out. The lump in my throat grew, I searched for Lilly or anyone that was sober. He reached to put a hand on the counter next to him and I flinched. This situation was too familiar.

"Relax, baby girl." Each word he said dripped out like a nightmare. The second the two girls behind me left, I moved to turn around and run to my car he grabbed my arm.

"Hey, " he said roughly as he tried to turn me back towards him. With a hard jerk, I got myself loose and kept my head down, shaking as I ran towards the door and the safety of my car. I was halfway down the cement pathway leading to the street when I felt a hard crash as I ran into someone.

"Sorry," I muttered as I tried to keep walking. But the boy I crashed into was holding onto my shoulders to make sure I stayed upright.

"Ally?" a comforting voice asked, I looked up into familiar, squinty brown eyes, "Hey, are you okay?" He asked in a small voice as I was noticeably shaking. I felt myself begin to relax the longer he held onto my shoulders.

"Um yeah, thanks, Josh", I answered as he loosened his firm hold on me.

"Okay, where you going somewhere?" He asked, glancing in the direction I was running in.

"No," I stated as I felt my cheeks grow hot, "I just wanted some fresh air."

"Me too," Josh said with his normal kind smirk. "Wanna go sit somewhere?"

"I'd love to," I said feeling safe again.

After we had found a quieter spot around the back of the house in a small garden that had 3 red plastic chairs, tried to break the silence.

"So I didn't take you for a real party kinda guy," I said while trying to figure out if he had soda or alcohol in his cup. He chuckled at my comment, "I'm not." He said dryly.

"Why are you here?" he asked after another moment or two of quiet.

I let out a deep sigh which made him laugh again, "My 'friend' Lilly drug me here then ditched me for some guy and a cocktail 30 seconds after we got here. How did you find yourself here?" I asked.

"Well, Tyler has this friend, Chris, and we don't get along super well." He never broke eye contact with me, " So I told Tyler that I would try to do more things with Chris. All three of us were going to come tonight but Tyler backed out at the last second. And same as you, right after we got here, he ditched me. I was about to start walking home when I saw you." On this last part, he dropped his eyes down to his shoes as gave a small smile.

I giggled which was unsettling since I haven't giggled since the 3rd grade. "I'm glad you stuck around." My cheeks grew hot once more as I also directed my eyes to my shoes. He took the last drink out of whatever was in his cup.

"I'm gonna go get something more to drink, can I get you something?" He asked earnestly.

"Root beer, please," I said as I extend my empty cup out.

"Same as me," He said whilst walking away.

"And a slice of cheese pizza?" I yelled after him. He didn't turn back but raised a thumbs up in my general direction. He returned several minutes later with two solo cups and two slices of pizza. He had a goofy grin on his face.

"I have some type of bodily excretion on my foot, I'm praying that it's pee. I hate that that's what I'm praying for."

I glanced down and his right foot was soaked.

"Grooosss,to" I said with a disgusted laugh as I grabbed my pizza and drink from him. "I didn't think that it was possible to smell like a liquor store without drinking anything, but here I am."

"Do you not drink?" He asked through a bite of pizza.

"Not really, that's about all I did from ages 19-21. I've had too many bad experiences with it. It's just safer for me not to drink. What about you?"

"I'll drink some every now and then on special occasions, but that's about it." He said still focused on his pizza.

We sat in a peacefully quiet while eating.

"I'm calling it, Chris ditched me," Josh said while standing up.

"What time is it? I could drive you home." I added quickly.

"Its past 9:30" Josh said checking his phone. "If you wouldn't mind driving me home? I only live a few miles from here."

I nodded, excited to leave.
