"Promise you'll call every day?" Niall whimpered, cuddling into Harry's warm arms. The love of his life was about to go on a year long business trip. Niall couldn't bare to let his baby just walk away.
"I promise, little one." Harry cradled Niall, letting the small blonde cuddle sleepily into his chest.
Harry was leaving in an hour, so he could be early to his flight. So he wanted to make the most out of the small amount of time. He placed a gentle kiss to Niall's blonde head of hair, as if Niall would shatter into a million pieces if he did it any less gently. Harry loved Niall with his whole heart.
"I'm gonna miss you so, so much," Niall brokenly whispered through his tears, letting out a choked sob.
"Hey hey hey, none of those tears, what are they for?" Harry wiped the tears from Niall's already bright pink cheeks. "You know I love you very much, baby." Harry whispered. It was the truth- Harry knew he wouldn't be able to find anyone like the blonde that was in his lap.
Harry waved goodbye from his cab, blowing a kiss to Niall. Niall was fighting tears with everything he had but as soon as the car pulled away from the house, the shaky blonde fell to the dewy ground and broke into silent sobs- big, fat tears rolling down his face. It was always difficult to let Harry leave. But this time it was different. This was a year long trip.
Once Niall had collected himself, he wandered back up to the steps of his flat and sat in the dining room chair, watching his phone, which was on the table. He felt the phone vibrate the whole table and light up with each message.
I miss you already baby
I miss you too :'(
Hang out with one of the other lads. Have some fun while I'm away sweety
How can I even think about having fun when you're not HERE???
Maybe Liam will take ya to the movies?
I don't wanna
After that, there wasn't an answer. Was there really anything to say after that? At least Niall could keep in mind that his baby would be calling him everyday. Maybe not that night considering how tired Harry would be. Niall knew what jet lag could do to a person, and he hated it.
That night, Niall was cold. He had no one to cuddle into. No one that would play with his hair and press gentle kisses to his cheeks. Most importantly he had no one to talk to. Harry was too tired to busy himself, thinking about Niall. Instead, he busied himself preparing for the long day ahead of him. He was to do a ton of work that week. But he promised to call Niall everyday.
And he kept that promise. Every time Harry got even five minutes of time alone, he pulled his phone out and called his blonde baby. This time, it was night. And Harry knew it was a different time where Niall was but he couldn't help but call him. He was tired and sore but knew Niall would appreciate the love either way.
"Hazza!" Niall cried, not evident in his deep voice. A small giggle escaped Harry's lips, the joy contagious.
"Hey, sweety. How are you?" Harry asked as he laid down on the bed in the hotel he'd been staying in for the past week.
"I'm okay, but... I miss you!" Harry could picture the pout on Niall's soft pink lips.
"I miss you, too. What did you do today?" Harry asked. He could hear shuffling on the other end.
"Louis came over. And he brought me ice cream to make me feel better!" Niall remembered the huge tub of ice cream that he shared with Louis. Which was empty by the end of the movie that the two watched.
"That's great! Well, you better get some sleep. I need some myself. Call you tomorrow?" Harry asked, smiling as the blonde on the other end whined.
"Y-yes, Hazza..." Harry could sense that Niall was on the verge of crying but he knew it was only because he'd woken the blonde up at a really late time and he was probably exhausted.
Harry did keep his promise. But one day, his calls started lessening. Some days, Niall would wait by the phone all day, scared to leave it alone for even a second. And later that day, Harry would text and simply state that he was busy and that he loved Niall. Soon enough the text was reduced to a simple, 'busy.'
Harry would call but only some days, and the call was less sincere than his first ones were. Harry didn't seem to like talking to Niall anymore. And needless to say, Niall was upset. He was way too afraid to voice this to Harry though. Harry was obviously busy, so why bother him?
But one day... the calls, the texts... they just stopped completely. There was no excuse for them. There was no simple 'busy' that was keeping Niall going. Harry just never said anything. Niall felt like he'd done something wrong. Like this was his fault that Harry didn't want to ever talk to him again.
Niall would sit by his phone the entire day. Hoping and wishing for a call. Maybe a call where Harry would talk to him and apologize because he was too busy and where Harry would tell Niall that he loved him to the moon and back. But Niall quickly realized that it wasn't happening. Maybe something bad happened. But what could happen to him?
Niall's heart was breaking. He tried not to complain to anyone but when Liam came over for a game night and asked how Harry was, Niall couldn't help but break into tears. Liam tried his best to assure the blonde that Harry would always come back. But Niall was too paranoid.
Niall would stay in his room all day, not even coming out to eat. He didn't feel like eating anyways. The love of his life wasn't talking to him. Some days were worse than others. There were days when Niall would feel so upset that when he actually did eat, he couldn't even hold down the food. And he would end up calling one of the boys to come an take care of him.
Louis and Liam were worried. They didn't understand why Harry wasn't contacting any of them. They were worried for Niall even more, considering the young blonde wasn't even himself anymore. There would be days that Niall would call up Liam because he was feeling so ill and upset that he just needed someone. And they hadn't seen the blonde laugh in months.
There was a point when Niall stopped caring. Of course, Harry wasn't completely gone from his mind. There were some days. Because, Niall's heart wasn't breaking anymore. It was broken. Just like Harry's promise.
It had been a year since Harry left. And Niall was anxious to see if Harry would come home. Maybe surprise him and show up at there doorstep, arms open wide for a hug. But it didn't happen the way that Niall thought it would. He wanted a happy ending to this story. But that's not how life wanted it.
Niall was sitting, watching a footy match, when his phone beside him started vibrating, indicating a call was coming through. Figuring it was probably either Louis or Liam, he glanced over at it and his eyes almost popped out of his head.
"H-harry?" Niall whimpered into the phone, a bolt of pain running through his heart.
"Hey. I need to tell you something, Niall." Harry's voice was stiff, the exact opposite from his usually carefree one. Niall nodded, even though he knew Harry would be able to see him. "I... ummm, I found someone else. And I'm not coming home."
Niall stiffened. How could Harry not love him anymore?
"Okay," Niall shakily replied as he hung up the phone, without another word. Niall curled into a ball, sobbing. Nothing he had ever felt had ever hurt as bad as those words in Niall's ear. His heart physically hurt. Harry had fallen out of love with him.
Niall's heart was shattered.
