The wind is cold and stale. The grass is dark, with barely any colour to reveal that it's alive. I guess that's what happens when it starts to get into the cold months. The temperature decreases, leaving you chilled to the bone and makes you want to hibernate in bed with the covers over your head.
The soft cushion on my bum, molding the shape of my body, makes it all better. The warmth of the car comforts me. Carson's breathing next to me sending me into a haze. His concentration on the road, brings me into my thoughts.
What is he thinking about? What does he see in me? Why is he being so nice? Is he having second thoughts about helping me out?
No... He said he would be here for me, he said he wouldn't leave me alone.
"What is it?" He questions, giving a glance in my direction, but back on the road ahead of him.
"Just thinking." I hum.
"About?"
"Do you always ask questions?" I laugh, feeling more comfortable with him than when he first found me in the closet.
"Yes... What's wrong love?" My thoughts get a bit crowded with the word 'love'. He has Irish in him. You dumb nut, I think.
I pause for a moment, thinking of a rational response, "Promise me."
"Promise what?" he sounds befuddled.
"Promise that you will never let me be alone again. Don't leave me in the dark, I can't go back." I whisper. I'm not sure why. We are alone, but I guess I feel like I'm speaking something forbidden and it shouldn't be said too loudly. Like Voldemort.
"This is it." he says, not answering my question. My face falls, knowing it was a shot in the park.
"Alright.... Thank you." I said this so quietly that I almost didn't hear it myself.
My hand finds the handle, my eyes not reaching his. I feel broken, more than ever, I have been doing this a lot lately. I carry false hope. I thought I would have learned by now, that I shouldn't trust anyone.
"Anna..." Carson calls out and I slip halfway out of the car. I step on the ground and twirl around. "Yes?" I breath.
"I promise."
My eyes shoot up to look at him and I smile. He promised... He really promised.
"Bye, Anna." I hear before my arms untangle from their mixed farm and shut the car door.
I walk up the driveway and smile happily. I throw my head back to look at the sky, it's so blue, clear as day with not a sight of dark in it. Perfectly describing my thoughts.

"I got fired." I hear my mom say as I walk in the house.
"You what?" My father answers back, he sounds like he's on the verge of tears.
"I don't know what we are going to do." She replies.
I run upstairs and close my door, hopefully going unnoticed. I'm happy and sad. My emotions are all over. Finally, I have someone who cares, now my parents are having issues. I mean, my mom got fired. What did she do?
A knock on my bedroom door startles me. I lift my head off the bed so I'm no longer lying down. "Yeah?" I call.
"Honey, I know you heard us..." My father comes into the room, "Don't worry okay? It's going to be just fine." he reaches.
"How did she get fired?" I ask tenderly.
He runs his tongue over his lower lip but doesn't answer. My eyes shift to the floor. "That bad, huh?" I laughed an irritated laugh.
"I'm going to go help with dinner. Don't worry." He repeats before exiting the room, but not before he gives the top of my head a swift kiss.
I sigh and flop my head on the bed. Hey, look on the bright side, I tell myself. You have a friend now.
He promised...
